gdgt

gdgt is the new consumer electronics site by Peter Rojas and Ryan Block -- the guys behind Engadget and Gizmodo. We're still prepping things (no, this isn't the final site!), but we've got a weekly podcast you can listen to in the meantime.

Feel free to leave your email address if you want to be notified when we launch in full. You can also reserve your user name in advance, but it'll be on a first come first serve basis. (If someone else requested your name first or we just can't offer it, we'll let you know when we launch.)

Don't worry, we will never, ever send anything junky to your email.

You can also follow Peter here (blog, Twitter), Ryan here (blog, Twitter), and any gdgt updates here.

Things may be looking utterly dire for Circuit City, which is shutting down 155 stores and filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy, but the gadget world goes on. The PlayStation 3 celebrates its second birthday this month, while RED's digital still and motion system was (finally) announced, as was a rather competitive $200 pricetag on the BlackBerry Storm for Verizon. We're also talking 4G wireless in the US, too -- but, don't worry, you won't have to trade in that new 3G handset just yet.

The BlackBerry Bold is finally out, the iPhone may soon be getting some much-needed features (like tethering and podcast downloads), and we're geeking on change: the kind this industry can use. A new generation is looking to the future, one free of the cuts and frustration of those awful plastic blister packs products come in. Oh, and we're also answering listener email, so listen up!

This week it's pretty much all about software, content, and content software: Netflix blew off the doors on its online offerings for Mac, Xbox 360 (in HD!), and TiVo, while we got to check out new versions of Windows and Ubuntu, and Sonos released its music network controller software for iPhone. Of course, things wouldn't feel right without a netbook announcement or two (like HP's Mini 1000 or Dell's Mini 12), and a touch of Android, but you already knew that was coming, didn't you? Oh, and happy Halloween!

gdgt roundtable - all about Android

Posted Oct 24, 2008

The T-Mobile G1, Google and HTC's first ever Android-powered handset, made its debut this week -- and there's absolutely no shortage of things to say about it. Fortunately for us, we've also assembled an amazing panel of roundtable guests not at all short of interesting things to say; we'll be going over the things we like, the apps we love, and all the bits that drive us crazy. If you're thinking of buying yourself a Googlephone (or even if you already brought one home), this is definitely the show for you.

As promised, on this week's show we'll be poring over Apple's slew of new laptop announcements all the way up and down the MacBook line. We've also both finally gotten our T-Mobile G1s, so we've got a bit to discuss as we prep for our long-promised Android roundtable show. And, of course, Microsoft got some press this week by announcing the official name of Windows 7 (you'll never guess what it's going to be called), as did Sony by releasing PSP 5.0 firmware, and Asus with its year anniversary of the blockbuster Eee PC.

It was a hell of a week -- and not just for the obvious reasons. Turns out Apple's about to rev its long in the tooth laptop lineup, RIM's new BlackBerry Storm blew onto the scene alongside Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic (aka, the "Tube"), while Nintendo and Microsoft offered up the DSi and new Xbox experience, respectively. Listen up, because things are definitely getting interesting.

We're a day early this week, but the home entertainment world still gave us plenty to discuss, between TiVo launching its Liquid TV bundle (and possibly a new interface for existing boxes), the MPAA suing Real over RealDVD, and Sling showing off its Slingcatcher and Slingbox PRO-HD. But we'll also take a few to check in on the T-Mobile G1, and the notorious iPhone developer NDA, which Apple finally loosened the tie on.

If you're looking to geek out on anything besides Android this week, you might want to look elsewhere -- this episode of gdgt weekly is all T-Mobile G1 all the time. We'll talk about the origins of Google's new mobile OS and HTC's G1 hardware, as well as the key differences (and similarities) the device will have to contend with as a new player in the ever-entrenched global mobile market. If you were thinking of picking up Google's new smartphone -- or simply interested to hear a little more about what it's like -- this is definitely the show for you. That is, until we do our Android roundtable show next month.

gdgt roundtable - Apple in 2008

Posted Sep 24, 2008

By all accounts, 2008 represented one of Apple's most historic and challenging years to date -- and to discuss, debate, and pick it apart, we've assembled a prestigious panel of experts for our new feature: gdgt roundtable. We'll break out the magnifying glass to take a look at the company's lackluster iPod launches, its increasingly strict stance taken with iPhone developers, the media's obsession with a post-Steve company, and how Apple managed a year fraught with such high-stakes successes and failures. Tune in, you won't want to miss this one -- that is, unless you're sick of hearing about Apple (in which case our next regularly scheduled episode of gdgt weekly will be out on Friday, as usual).

Microsoft managed to get the last of Zune's fall updates -- the 3.0 software -- out the door this week, but it was actually some imaging companies that stepped up with some unexpected surprises. Canon's 1080p video-shooting EOS 5D Mark II DLSR and Kodak's new OLED photo frame handily made us sit up and take notice. But there's still the lingering matter of netbooks: where are they going, what's worth buying, and, let's be honest, what are they? Like, really, how are they different from laptops? This and more in the latest gdgt weekly.

It's CTIA week, which means there's plenty to talk about in the cellphone world, especially from the likes of RIM and HTC. But Microsoft and Apple both launched their fall media player lineups, too: underwhelming Zunes followed by underwhelming iPods. We've got the skinny on all this and more in gdgt weekly for the second week of September!

P.S. -Try not to mind the audio issues, we're still working out the kinks. And again, big thanks to everyone for tuning in, we're still holding steady in the top five shows on iTunes!

There's definitely been a lot going down in the gadget world over the last year we've been off the air, but we're back, and we've got a bit of catching up to do! In our first episode of gdgt weekly, we'll be going over some of the big news we've missed discussing (including Bill G leaving Microsoft, Helio's collapse, the Optimus Maximus launching, Apple's MacBook Air and the second-gen Zunes), as well as this week's latest: Nikon's D90 (that'd be the DSLR that shoots HD video), next Tuesday's Apple event, and possibly our most anticipated product of the year, HTC's Android-running Dream.

P.S. -We already hit #1 on iTunes for tech podcasts, and #5 for all shows! More here. (In case you find you're having any issues with the iTunes feed refresh it, or quit iTunes and hit it again.) Thanks for listening!

Pardon our dust

Posted Sep 04, 2008

An outpouring of gadget fans have been asking and wondering about what Peter and I are up to. A lot's changed in a year -- Peter finally switched from Palm (to BlackBerry), I finally left Engadget, and in many ways we're both starting over. But some things have stayed the same: we are both obsessed with gadgets, and want to find new ways to share in that obsession with the rest of the world.

We've got our work cut out for us before we can get gdgt out the door. (By the way, we say it with each letter, but you can call it "gadget" if you want.) So while we can't talk too much about the final site just yet, we can definitely listen. What are you -- the gadget hound, the first-adopter, the Engadget and/or Gizmodo reader -- looking for in your online consumer electronics experience? Now that we've redefined (tech) news for the always-on, always-connected world, what comes next? Where can we add value without adding noise? That's the kind of stuff we're thinking about.

In the meantime, I'm really excited that we'll be coming back on the air with a new show: gdgt weekly, will will run on Fridays. We'll be discussing the goings on of the gadget world, our thoughts on products, listener feedback and questions, and maybe even sharing the occasional tidbit on gdgt as we continue to work toward launch. Listeners of our old show should feel right at home, but we're still looking for your feedback on how to improve it, so feel free to hit us up.

Much love to everyone for all the support; please feel free to hit us up via email (contact at gdgt). More coming soon!

-Ryan
