WD TV Live also for data backup?
details
Hello everybody, I'd like to purchase the WD TV Live but besides the obvious media playback, I would also love to backup my PC data to the USB drive connected to the WD TV Live box. This way, all my data is save and I also have all my media files on the USB drive ready to play back on the TV without my laptop. So: how does the WD TV live mount the USB drive? Can a typical backup program use it for scheduled backups? Thanks for your help guys!!

Questions before I buy...

I just sold my Apple TV and am deciding on its replacement. Everything I've read indicates that this is really the way to go at this point in the game, but I am hoping some of you who own it might find a minute or two to answer a few questions. 1) More than 1 Newegg review said that the non-networked model was better for playback and general performance. Is that just because they had network issues or is this really that much different in terms of internal hardware and the firmware? Should I... Read more →

WiFi works!

While the unit does not have on-board wireless, there are many wireless USB adapters supported naively by the firmware. I also checked the box and found no mention of being able to use wireless with it - but it is mentioned on the WDTV website if you're looking for it. A list of WD's "confirmed working" adapters is here: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduse... I'm using a Trendnet TEW-644UB 802.11N adapter (in G mode to a... Read more →

I am Impressed.

Works as advertised. Has played everything i've tried from Divx, Xvid, wmv's. It even plays .iso files of DVDs ripped with DVDFab. The flac support is nice too. One thing I did was to setup a separate user account for the WD Live on my Win7 box and control the directory access through the Share feature. This cuts down on the clutter when browsing through the listings. The interface is rather intuitive so much so my non-techie wife is having no problems. I'd highly recommend this...

Pretty good, but room for improvement

Overall I have found using the WD TV Live to be very satisfying, but I do have a couple of minor quibbles. Firstly, menu customisation. Being able to disable menu options (I don't live in the US, so why should I want Pandora in my menu?) and to be able to select what the default source is within a particular menu/sub-menu would make navigation a lot speedier. Secondly, the ability skip forward and back rather than just fast-forward and rewind within media. This would hold true for the other... Read more →
