http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57387199-92/toshiba-to-acquire-western-digitals-3.5-inch-hdd-manufacturing-equipment/ Okay, I am confused. It was only a year ago that Western Digital bought Hitachi's hard drive division. Does this mean they are selling their own 3.5" manufacturing process and moving strictly to using what they bought from Hitachi, or does this sale include what they bought from Hitachi? However you slice it, the hard drive industry, which has already been a giant bag of suck for...
it says it backs up files and then if you go to put it on a new computer or a formatted one it doesnt register the original back up files. happened to me and happened to somone else i know. besides that it is very slow and performs awfully. the harddrive itself has slow transfer speeds due to its portability being so great. so i guess thats a trade off. i formatted the drive now and just drag and drop stuff in there.
started audio/video & podcast production hard drive space came at a premium especially since I bought a Samsung HMX H106 HD camera, this became a life saver, especially the storage demand of media. So I don't understand the bad reviews!!! And now that I'm using both a Mac & a PC, this is even more valuable!!! I especially love the face I don't need a power cable!!!
my pc says its not recognized as a usb 2.0 device or something like that and i have tried it on other pc's and its the same thing. I don't know if its damaged physically or if there is something wrong with the drivers or what....I need my data and I need it fast....HELP!!!!!
The network file sharing was flawless. Can't wait to test it out with the new keyboard update. Great proDUCT Western Digitial $(*_*)$ you are priMO!!!!
As if I don't have enough hard drives laying around, but hey -- 1TB and it's bus powered?! I'll take it! Anyway, I think I'm going to wipe my computer tonight and start fresh. Has anyone used one of these guys before? Any issue with it? Edit: Corrected 1GB to 1TB thanks to Cam.
It allowed me to just copy and save. Fairly easy to use. I read reviews where people were having issues with the usb coming out at random. I did not. As a matter of fact it was not loose at all. Quiet, and fast. Just like it like it.
it's super fauxing slow, and I'm planning to return it to my pc once I get the data migrated to my DROBO which runs at FW800 speeds. hmm, maybe i'll get a drobo for my pc too, heh heh.
Hello everybody, I'd like to purchase the WD TV Live but besides the obvious media playback, I would also love to backup my PC data to the USB drive connected to the WD TV Live box. This way, all my data is save and I also have all my media files on the USB drive ready to play back on the TV without my laptop. So: how does the WD TV live mount the USB drive? Can a typical backup program use it for scheduled backups? Thanks for your help guys!!
Just bought a 2012 retina Macbook pro. I love everything about it except that the hard drive size is about the same as my old laptop from 2007 (SSD will do that). I'm currently debating between these choices for upgrading my storage device from a 1TB WD My book from 2008 to one of these. I will be mainly storing photos, digital copies of blu rays and some music and home movies. I don't travel that much, but when I travel I would like to bring this. I want at least 1TB and have a budget of between...

It's time to replace an external hard drive on which I store 300 movies and tv shows. The WD My Book 1 TB drive has served me well, but since my two year old son has tossed it around a bit, the USB connection on the drive is a little wonky. Ultimately, I would love a RAID array like a Drobo, but pricing is way to expensive. So in the mean time I keep all my media on this drive and serve it up around the house, and back up to another drive, just in case Any recommendations for good, cheap,...

all reviews I read for this kind of item are half negative half positive, complains on dropped connection or unstable usb port, which is the most important, also I'm wondering if I would be able to connect my WD passport to the router as a network hard drive
I am trying to find an external hard drive which will allow me to dump the contents of either an SD card or a USB stick (an SD card in a USB adapter in reality) directly onto it without the need for a computer. I have recently gotten a Canon EOS Rebel T3 and am taking many many pictures. It would be far more convenient if I could simply dump all of the photos directly onto an external hard drive instead of involving my laptop every time. I don't have a necessity to pick out photos off to card,...

It's the time of year for picture and video taking. I'd love to hear how others, especially parents and hobbyists, set up their systems for uploading, editing, sharing, viewing, and backing up their photos and videos? I'm a little all over the place. I did recently buy a WD drive that will share my media across several computers and, ostensibly, over the web. I'm on Flickr and just started using Picasa Web Albums. I'm more interested in sharing and viewing than backing up. Are Flickr and Picasa...

Thinking of getting the WD MyBook just so my wife and I can both easily access photos, videos, music and don't have to keep them on 2 separate PCs. Are there better options?
I want a new external hard drive that is extremely well built but not necessarily one of the hideous ones from the "rugged" category. I'm leaning towards something from LaCie right now but I want to hear some more suggestions.
There's a multitude of options. Apple TV (too restrictive), Roku or Boxee boxes (bit expensive for my likings), numerous HDMI docking stations, WD TV I have a 1TB esata drive that I'd like to use for playback rather than going the wireless route, although would consider wireless. Any suggestions around the $100 mark?
When my computer is running, the MyBook turns off or spins down after periods of inactivity. However, it will spin non-stop after I shut down my computer. Fortunately, there is a power button in the back but I don't always remember to shut it off, which means it's probably spinning more often than not.
*.mkv with h.264 and/or VC1 video with AC3/DTS sound. do either support HD lossless codecs in *.mkv embedded and/or external subtitles in *.Mkv and *.mp4/*.m4v -*.srt subtitles -*.idx & *.sub subtitles *.m4v with h.264 video and ac3 sound In terms of WAF, which of these 2 work better? Which one means less headaches and a better "just works" approach. For our use, streaming video is a wash since we have a Bu-Ray player that handles our preferred streaming service, NetFlix. It it...
Some open and just display a black screen and no audio, while others return an "Unsupported Resolution" error. I can understand that resolution problem, but I don't get why some MKV's don't throw an error at all? ... either way I'm converting the MKV's to AVI's to get around the problem.
Have no issues with the video, plays them effortlessly but the audio..there is a whizzing sound whenever the video is played. Can hear it for all types of videos & audio.
I'd start playing a track and then after about 13 or 14 seconds it would cut out and then either start up again a few seconds later (in the place it would have been if it had kept playing) or skip to the next track. Then most tracks stopped playing entirely. I figured it was a problem with the Sonos, but I was able to stream from other sources without any problem, and when I logged into the ShareSpace itself and grabbed the logs I found a bunch of error messages like these: 10/07/12...
