I'm very happy with my external, have had it for 1.5 years and have had no trouble with it what so ever.
Durability and Portability are what you'd expect. I package it back in the original box if I'm transporting it any long distance (so I don't lose the wires). But honestly a 1TB drive is going to sit in your house as your main media storage or back up storage, not travel around. And I'm way too careful to test the durability but seems you could drop it and it'd live.
