The Viewsonic VSD220 is a unique 22-inch monitor that doubles as a standalone Android-powered All-In-One. It does a decent job in both roles but is not without flaws.

If you’re willing to abandon Windows or Mac OS and conduct your day-to-day work on a mega-size Android tablet, the ViewSonic VSD220 is a classy take on what may well be a new desktop genre.

We can see its use, if you want to fire-up a web browser and have a quick look online and nothing more. If you want to do anything more complex, including using word processing apps, we think you're going to walk away quite disappointed.

The ViewSonic VSD220 offers tablet-like features with Android software while still working as a regular monitor. Sadly its poor performance, unimpressive display and lack of inputs means it's not great as either a tablet or a monitor.

Thanks to its decent multi-touch optical screen, it can handle basic Android tasks well too. However, as the display quality isn't that hot and Android can be hard work on such a large screen, it's not quite the perfect solution.

We really want to like the Viewsonic VSD220 Smart Display. It's a great concept that promises a lot and just occasionally delivers. But it needs a faster processor and an upgrade to Android Jelly Bean at the bear minimum before we can fully recommend it.

The idea of having Android on the desk in a big screen has a certain level of geek appeal that drew me to it. But after a period of concerted use it turned out to be a less than wowing experience.

ViewSonic's VSD220 Smart Display is a great first stab at a smart display let down only by occasional laggy performance and the fact that better is likely on the horizon.
