Conclusion: We're mixed

Toshiba's Z830/Z835 ultrabooks are something of a mixed bag. While laptops in the series are generally lighter than many competing models — which should certainly be a key consideration for anyone shopping for an ultrabook — they're also somewhat less powerful, have less attractive displays, and sport an uninspired design. However, they manage to pack a full range of ports, including USB 3.0 and HDMI, and a battery that can run for over 7 hours on a charge. And some models in the series are available for as little as $800. While that's a bargain compared to some high-end ultrabooks, it pits the series squarely against the HP Folio 13, which has a very good keyboard, and offers better performance overall. If you must have the lightest, cheapest ultrabook around, the Z835 is still worth considering. Otherwise, go with the Folio 13.

We can only ding a laptop so much for being homely. Once you get past the Z835's dated looks (and you will as soon as you pick it up), it's actually among the best Ultrabooks we've seen...It's earned a bunch of superlatives here: lightest, best battery life and most robust selection of ports.

The Toshiba Portege Z835 is arguably the best Ultrabook yet--and certainly the best option under $1,000. For $899, you get the lightest 13-inch laptop around, full-size ports, and an accurate touchpad. The nearly 7 hours of battery life is another big plus.

The Toshiba Portege Z835-P330 may not be the best ultrabook on the market, but it does stand out due to its light weight, exceptional feature set, and category-leading battery life.

It barely weighs anything, and the profile is slim to be sure. It's a testament to how technology has evolved that a notebook like this is even possible, but there were definitely sacrifices made.

This is certainly an easier laptop to recommend than the Acer Ultrabook (the other sub-$1000 option), but it isn't quite as likable as the Asus Zenbook UX31E or Lenovo IdeaPad U300s.
