Conclusion: We like it
Toshiba's Portege R830/R835 series shows that, while traditional ultraportable laptops have been upstaged by ultrabooks, they haven't gone away — and they're often cheaper and include more features than their superslim siblings. The R835 weighs about 3.2 pounds, includes an optical drive, and has a full complement of ports, including HDMI, VGA, Ethernet and USB 3.0. It also includes WiDi for wireless streaming to a compatible HDTV, and has good battery life. If you're willing to carry something slightly heavier than a typical ultrabook, want the convenience of a DVD drive, and want to save a little cash, the R835 is well worth considering.

Read the full review →Unfortunately, the last major issue with the R835 is the cooling design. I'm not convinced this is unsolvable, but Toshiba may have to make serious revisions under the hood to get thermals in check—or they have to look at sacrificing quiet running for lower temperatures.

I have this with a 256 GB SSD, core i5 and 4GB of RAM. The fact it doesn't heat up my lap like every other laptop I have ever owned is wonderful. A more powerful laptop meant bigger, heavier and hotter for me. Not after using this. I only wish I had gotten the i7 processor and a larger hard...
