AT&T announced that they won't be acquiring T-Mobile due to antitrust concerns. Crazy! Because of this breakup, T-Mobile will get $4 billion in cash. Not too shabby.
AT&T users: Does this hinder AT&Ts plan for building an LTE network? T-Mobile users: I imagine you're feeling pretty good right now!
The folks over at Wired have gotten their hands on an interesting Department of Justice document from August 2010 called "Retention Periods of Major Cellular Service Providers" that details how long they hold onto your data: this includes subscriber info, cell and text message details, IP sessions, and so on. Wired has helpfully created some easy-to-read infographics to lay it all out: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/09/cellular-customer-data/ As a T-Mobile customer it concerns me that they...

Big news today for those who've been against the pending AT&T-Mobile merger. The U.S. government has stepped in and sued to stop the merger from going through. The believe such a merger would have significant implications on competition in the mobile industry. From Bloomberg: ---- In the complaint filed today in federal court in Washington, the Justice Department is seeking a declaration that Dallas-based AT&T’s takeover of T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE), would violate...

Thursday I got a call from T-Mobile telling me that new plans were available and they were just letting the customers know so they could go over the plans on the phone and make sure their customers were getting the best price. I declined, saying I would just go on the website and look at the plans myself. Good thing I did—what I actually discovered was that the plan I currently have (Get More 600 + unlimited text, which is about $40/month) was eliminated and the only way I could get...

In a recent gdgt blog post around the time of the AMD event in Seattle there was a mention that another gdgt event is being planned for the Seattle area later this summer. Has a date been already set?
P.S. saw the new g2x from lg for t-mobile. Don't know for sure if the frequencies on it are gonna be supported by at&t overtime. Also the concern is to get a phone which would support international frequencies in addition to t-mobile. Thanks!
As I'm sure you've heard by now T-Mobile USA is getting bought out by AT&T. According to the press release that means that T-Mobile is going away in about 1 year. Anybody who stays will become part of AT&T. So I ask are you going to switch to Verizon, Sprint or a regional; or stay with AT&T? Personalty I thing Verizon will be getting my money as soon as they come out with an LTE phone I like. Though the EVO 3D may tempt me mighty in the mean time.
1. It makes sense for T-Mobile. Deutsche Telekom has been trying to unload T-Mobile USA for a while now, and it was probably just a matter of time until they found a buyer. I don't think they're interested in being the the fourth biggest player in any market. Despite rebadging HSPA+ as 4G and calling itself "America's Largest 4G Network", T-Mobile doesn't actually have any plans to deploy LTE -- they simply don't own the spectrum for it -- and so was going to...

Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T (rumored, not official yet) are making some pricing changes that look cost prohibitive to their customers or taking away some discount offers that they've offered for years to keep customers. Usually when these types of pricing changes go into affect for one carrier, the rest follow. It's like clockwork. Here are the details of AT&T's purported pricing changes:...

Originally published in the gdgt newsletter, sign up at http://gdgt.com/newsletter/ It looks like sooner or later we're going to witness the end of unlimited wireless data plans here in the States. They had a good run, but all indications are that eventually all of the major US wireless carriers are going to follow AT&T's lead and institute data caps of some kind. I'm not sure anyone is super happy about this, most people like the idea of being able to surf the web, watch online...

(http://www.tmonews.com/2010/09/t-mobile-will-not-... This makes me so mad at T-Mobile. So much for vanilla 2.2 and with HSPA 14.4 supported, well that will make hacking this phone so much sweeter.
I call them (T-Mobile's customer service is awesome) and after trying out my G1 and that not working ether, they say its probably the SIM card. I'm going to a T-Mobile store soon to get a new one. Wish me luck guys! Has anybody heard of this happening before? Is it something about the N900 or the fact that the SIM has moved between phones? Because all that seems insane to me.
[rant] I really despise the US Carriers (other than t-mo) for their locking-BS. So the Streak is coming to AT&T (who cares?) Why isn't the Streak coming to w/e carrier you have? I realize that AT&T and T-Mo are both on GSM, but T-mo is the only Carrier that requires NO CONTRACT, EVER. I'd leave T-Mo for (another US carrier) if they didn't require that I have a contract, whether or not I have a phone. [/rant] (... ok ok i'll stop ranting before i get too far off topic.)
I'm not in the overrated boat of people who think that the "Apple way" of UI design is the greatest there ever was and honestly believe that Android is magical. (ha!) So I've just got one question about switching over, can I use the SIM from my iPhone or do I need to go into AT&T and have them give me a new one?
And I want it NOW After a fleeting visit to 3 store Newport, I asked "what's new on Android" .. as you do, the sales assistant a plunged a Sony Saito in my hand and assured me its exactly what I wanted, I escaped to in intended destination T-Mobile Newport to lay my hands on my object of desire. I went prepaired to the T-Mobile UK Store in Newport with a wad of Cash - My transfer Codes and Identity hopeing to Sign up for the most anticipated new phone in years "No - You...

Last week, C.W. Nevius, a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote an editorial on how to potentially curb smart-phone thieves. He argued that some carriers in foreign countries (e.g., Australia) will actually block mobile phones from their networks if reported stolen. (See: http://articles.sfgate.com/2011-12-03/bay-area/30473599_1_phone-companies-smart-phone-phone-thefts) From the SF Chronicle: Australia uses something akin to a serial number, basically a 15-digit fingerprint found on ...

The droid is in perfect condition, plus he's gonna give me am extra 100 bucks. Blackberry just isn't keeping up and though I love the physical keyboard the software is really getting to be a little too problematic. I used to love my bb for bbm... But that's not even reliable anymore plus most of my pals moved over to iPhone. I have honestly never played around with android and in interest of helping me make the best decision I'll give you some of my concerns/other factors. -when you switch a...

Now that new phones like the Droid RAZR and Nexus Prime are creeping up to the $249/$299 price points, are the Telcos under any obligation to adjust their ETFs? Are these new phones really that much more expensive to manufacture that the consumer has to pay $50-$100 more while still being handcuffed with a $350 ETF? Not to mention new policies like Tmobile's automatic contract extension if you want to change your calling plan. To me, a policy like this clearly contradicts the Telco's claims that...

This weekend I attended New York Comic Con at the Javits Center. I've been to that convention center many times, and I know it's pretty notorious for terrible cell service inside the building. The basement is especially bad. I attended an hour-long panel down there this year and even after I went upstairs to the ground floor I still didn't get reception back. I went outside to 11th Avenue (as in on the street, under the open sky, as open as NYC can get, anyway) and still nothing. It took two...

So I'm on Sprint currently, and they have announced that they're killing unlimited data use through their hotspot add-on plan, which I use. It's a major bummer, because I specifically opted for that option as it would let me use data freely without worrying about the 5gb cap that other carriers and other plans have. (I don't go crazy with it, but I do go over 5gb often) And now I'm right back where I started, with a cap. They won't even be grandfathering in users like myself who signed a...

I'm finally getting a smartphone and was thinking about getting an unlocked Nexus One or Nexus S and then purchasing a 500 Minute Value™ Bundle with Data (Unlimited Plus) plan for $50 a month from T-Mobile.
Does this sound like a good plan? I want to get a GSM phone and it seems like buying the phone I want unlocked and getting the plan separately is the cheaper way to go.
Google Voice is starting to really annoy me. Recently, I've been failing to receive calls when people call my Google Voice number, "texts" take forever to send over the Google Voice app despite having a solid data connection (main complaint), and the Google Voice app just sucks UI-wise when compared to other fully featured SMS apps. I've been thinking about going back to my regular number because of these issues several times in the past 6 months but I've been stuck to Google Voice because of...

Purchasing a smartphone is not an cheap matter. In most of the world, and notably Europe, mobile phone communication technologies (including frequencies) are standard and allow users to change carriers, and continue to use the devices upon which they've spent money and built their lives around. In some countries, SIM-locking devices to a carrier is not allowed. The technology divide between GSM and CDMA in the US has been a barrier to easy migration between one carrier and another. Even if not...

I commute up and back from SF daily on Caltrain. I currently have an AT&T phone that gets decent signal on the way up to work in the morning, but in the afternoon I'd be lucky to load a couple of web pages. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with other carriers? Ultimately I want to get a wifi device so that I can get my Xoom or laptop online for my commutes, I would prefer 4G speed, but being able to connect at all would be a requirement.
I am currently a disgruntled T-mobile customer that wants to keep his contract-free plan and GSM (Galaxy S; Vibrant) phone/ Tab. I can't go to AT&T because T-mo uses different bands and Verizon/ Sprint are completely out because their bands are incompatible. Is there any Android-based (or any) phone in existence that supports all the major US carriers? Am I stuck with the US carrier that I start with? is there no way to change carriers without getting stuck in a Contract or outright buying...

So Apple added Verizon as a carrier option and sales increased significantly. Will Apple add T-Mobile and Sprint as carrier options for iPhone 5/4S? Or will Apple stick with the big guys and leave the little fish for Google? Together T-Mobile and Sprint have a similar number of customers to AT&T or Verizon. I think that is too big a market to ignore at this point in the game. The antenna issues for a single phone for all carriers in the US are not trivial, but if Apple can pull it off...
I'm wondering if T-Mobile customers will be free to go to other mobile carriers before their 2 year contracts are up, if/when the AT&T merger goes through. I was interested in buying one of the newer smartphones on T-Mobile, but only because the phones I want on other networks are coming out in Q4/Winter. If the deal goes through would I be able to circumvent an early termination fee with T-Mobile? (Please Note: My question is not whether or not you believe the deal will go through, how terrible...

I'm coming to US for the summer to work and I'm in a desperate need for a suitable phone solution (and fast flat rate data). I currently own HTC Desire and Legend but neither of these support US 3G bands. Based in my research there are few "out of the box" possibilities available: T-Mobile's prepaid with 2GB of data per month. + Prepaid and good amount of data - Only works in 2G mode with my phones - For 3G I would need a new phone which isn't useful outside T-Mobile Virgin MIFI + Fast data...

Their 2G service runs at 850 / 1900 MHz (like AT&T), while their 3G service runs on 1700 / 2100 MHz (compared to AT&T's 3G HSPA, which also runs at 850 / 1900 MHz). AT&T mentioned the additional spectrum as a benefit of the acquisition. Will future AT&T phones need to be designed with some sort of quad-band 3G chip?
Or do you know where we could find this? A friend of mine asked this on Twitter, and I think it'd be an interesting thing to see. Presumably, it'll be pretty easy for AT&T to outfit existing T-Mobile towers with their radio transmitters (and vice-versa, if they decide to use T-Mobile's expanded frequency range in addition to theirs as well).
