The DS412+ may seem expensive, but if you're looking for a robust, fast network-storage device for a home office or small business, it could be well worth its price. Its four drive bays can support up to 16TB of storage, adding drives is easy, and if you need even more storage, eSATA and USB 3.0 ports are available for external drives. Synology 's software lets you easily configure the DS412+ as a media server, a cloud-based data server, for RAID backups, or just about anything else that requires a massive amount of network and internet-accessible storage.

After 2 months of use, I find the Synology DS412+ to be an extremely capable NAS device for my needs. I regularly serve HD video to my Apple TV and other media players (my main use), without interruption. I have yet to enable automatic backups to the NAS, but do use the server to archive...

When my single NAS volume got ~66% full (4x3TB WD Green, Synology RAID), the write speed of small files started to fall to literally kB/s (yes, kb!), making the DS412+ useless. Writing large files (GB) does not suffer from this "feature" and it is easy to reach for them 120MB/s. The issue with...
