I use the device as a media server by connecting it to a Mac Mini running Plex via AFP (not UPnP). It works well with the Plex Media Server, it goes to "sleep" when not used and wakes up when meda is needed. The scanning process does not seem to wake up the NAS. Running the HDDs in RAID mode...
