Conclusion: We're mixed

As an all-in-one touchscreen computer that works well with Windows 8, the Vaio Tap 20 falls short of our Must-have model, the Dell XPS One 27. However, that larger, more versatile, PC starts at $1,999. The more modest, 20-inch Tap 20 starts at under $900, and, as AllThingsD points out, is " a great family computer" that's "fun, versatile and can handle everyday tasks with no problem." PC World agrees, and likes the way it can be set up to lay completely flat, and can be carried around the home, functioning both as a" small all-in-one and a really big tablet." While PCWorld found the Tap 20's performance, it still praises it as offering a "unique PC experience."

The Tap 20 is undeniably cool, but some of the details need to be fleshed out. Still, at about $880, it's not all that expensive, particularly if you consider that it's both a small all-in-one and a really big tablet.

The Sony VAIO Tap 20 doesn't deliver the performance we'd expect for a $1,000 PC. The real value of the Tap 20, however, lies in its 10-point touch screen, integrated battery and family-friendly applications. This device really shows off Windows 8's true potential.

In terms of performance, the Tap 20 does not present itself as a good buy for $1,000. You could definitely get a more powerful and capable computer for the money.

We'll take our hats off to Sony for being original, but this little - well, rather large - experiment doesn't gel together particularly well due to its size. There's some good to be taken away, as the ideas are solid, but otherwise all its quirks will add little benefit to the majority of users.

The Vaio Tap 20 Mobile Desktop lives in a space between a touchscreen tablet and a full-fledged all-in-one PC. The machine is a pretty good choice if you’re looking for a family PC with multiple personalities.

It isn’t a dreadful product by any means: the screen is excellent, it’s responsive and well-designed. Once again, though, it’s close but no cigar for a Sony Windows 8 device.

... Sony did grab our attention with a comfortable touch experience and a well-configured screen. But to get more than three stars, Sony will have to revise a number of things, such as the speaker quality and the graphics.

The Tap 20 feels like a genuine step forward in all-in-one PC design: lighter, better looking and more portable than anything else on the market. It's all rather futuristic, even compared to other all-in-ones, let alone regular desktop machines.
