Conclusion: Pass on it

Sony's SmartWatch — essentially a Bluetooth remote for your smartphone — shows the potential value of an always-connected device you can wear on your wrist. Unfortunately, at this point, potential is about all there is to the SmartWatch. Largely useful for short notifications of incoming calls, text messages, emails, tweets, and the like, it's not particularly handy for replying to these messages; you'll still need your phone for that. Additionally, its display is difficult to read in bright sunlight, and it only works with Android phones. Updated apps may add new functionality to the SmartWatch, but for now, it provides a very small window into the vast universe of your smartphone.

The Sony SmartWatch shows promise, but needs plenty of work ... and unlike other smart watches, pretty much becomes useless when not paired with a phone. But for those who have trouble digging that Galaxy Note out of their pockets, the SmartWatch could be just the ticket.

The point of this kind of watch is to pair with a smartphone and provide quick and easy alerts, but the Sony SmartWatch wasn’t especially easy to use. If you’re an Android smartphone user and are in the market for this kind of compatible device, I’d hold out for a smarter smart watch.

It’s an expensive sell for something that, for the most part, remains a gimmick. We’re not convinced with the usability of the SmartWatch’s display when outdoors, either ... Nonetheless, there’s a long way to go before accessories like the Sony SmartWatch break into the mainstream.

The Sony SmartWatch is a relatively cheap toy to mess around with – though odds are if you want an Android compatible smart watch right now, you’ll be more than up to the task of fiddling with WIMM One which, for only $50 more, brings a lot more to the table than Sony’s offering.

For its part, the SmartWatch provides intriguing possibilities. But based on my experience, its time isn't now.

The features of this device are great. But the reliability and battery life made it a real hassle to use. It would loose connection to my phone (LG Optimus V... yes I know not the greatest phone and not on the slim compatibility list, but bluetooth is bluetooth dang it!) about a dozen times a...
