Three things I love about the PS3 that have nothing to do with games:
details
1. The XMB. It is a much cleaner and easier way to navigate. Now, once you get into the Playstation Store it is a mess just like Xbox Live. But, the XMB is where you will spend most of your time. 2. Using an old laptop as a "media server" and streaming video to the PS3 using PS3 Media Server. So far this has worked very well with my Mac and PC. And has stifled my thoughts of getting a Boxee or Apple TV. 3. Being able to control the PS3 using my TV remote. Now, this is probably only... Read more →

So I love my ps3 but one thing has bothered me a bit lately it seems like every time I get a new game my ps3 tells me it must download an update for that game…

before I can play. I like the idea that developers can make fixes to a game after it ships but come on every game? A lot of the updates are not small eather the last thing you want to do when you get a new game home is wait 30 min for it to update before you can play.

Sony's 3D offerings so far....
details
I spent some time in the Sony Style store in Dallas yesterday looking at the 3D offerings. I saw three different techniques: 3D on blu-ray, a hybrid 2D/3D HDTV (no glasses needed), and 3D on the PS3. For 3D on blu-ray, they had a demo disc running that had screensaver type images running in a short continuous loop. The 3D looked pretty good once you got it to work. They had a table behind the TV full of about 10 sets of 3D glasses. People would walk up, try them on, and then shake their heads.... Read more →

About PS3 firmware update 3.
details
40 I updated to the new 3.40 firmware last night and didn't see many changes. Two items I saw were an updated picture gallery that allowed for Picasa and Facebook uploads and a video editor program that allowed you to edit local videos and upload them to Facebook or Youtube. The only other changes I read about are the ability to get PlayStation Plus and rate PlayStation Store purchases. I may get PlayStation Plus once I see what kind of content they offer after a few months since I buy lots... Read more →

Blu-ray video and audio bitrate list:
details
I'm gonna start making a list for blu-rays I watch where I list the average video/audio bitrate for those interested. This is not scientific or measured - it is purely observational. When I watch these movies, I will generally check (by hitting "Display" on the PS3 blu-ray remote or my Harmony remote) every 10 to 20 minutes. Avatar - average video bitrate of 31 Mbps [AVC]- fixed audio bitrate of 7.5 Mbps [DTS-HD 5.1] Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - average video bitrate of 25... Read more →

Red Dead Redemption is out on May 18th. Are you getting it?
details
Personally, I have some bizarre, guilty pleasure of enjoying spaghetti westerns. This new open-ended game from Rockstar Games looks so fun and I can't wait for its release. I'll probably be picking up a copy the day it comes out on the PS3. It even has multiplayer. Maybe we can get some folks together and start a gdgt posse! Anyway, it looks awesome. So I've always taken the postings about PS3 firmware updates breaking people's systems with a grain of salt.
details
At least I did before it happened to me Saturday night. Updated my console, bought some videos from the PSN Store, watched the videos and then, when trying to back out of Folding at Home a few hours later, discovered my console had locked up. After I tried, unsuccessfully, to restart it, I killed the power with the hard switch in the back and tried to reboot. The green light would come on, but neither the TV nor my controller recognized that there was a PS3 in the room. After running through the... Read more →
