Conclusion: Pass on it

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX20 is the most stylish of the latest ruggedized, waterproof digital cameras. Unfortunately, its image quality isn't on par with similar cameras from other manufacturers, including the Olympus Tough TG-820, which also happens to sell for about $50 less. While the Olympus (and most other ruggedized cameras) may not fit in your shirt pocket, it's a better option to stuff into your hiking shorts or strap to your wrist for your next scuba outing.

The rugged camera that doesn't look rugged, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX20 is a nice option for people wanting an ultracompact for days by the pool and nights on the town.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX20 is gorgeous on the outside thanks to a slick and slim design and a sharp rear touch-screen LCD. This rugged pocket camera is waterproof to 16 feet, but its image quality is very disappointing.

The Sony TX20 flies in the face of its burly, ruggedized waterproof camera competition with James Bond-like class and finesse. It's fun and speedy to shoot, and features a 3-inch touchscreen LCD display.

If history is any indication, we’ll probably end up recommending the TX20 to friends and family who don’t know better and don’t care to, just like we did for the TX10. But if you are in any way serious about photography, look to this camera’s competitors instead.

Digital Versus Jun 19, 2012

The Sony Cyber-shot TX20 is a sleek, responsive, touch-control, high-resistance underwater compact that's very much like its predecessor, the TX10. However, there's still plenty of room for improvement—particularly with the lens.
