The RX1 is a small camera capable of astonishing image quality. Its handling marries classic camera ergonomics with a couple of cyber-shot quirks but it's still a lovely camera to shoot with. If a fixed 35mm lens will fulfill any of your shooting requirements, then there's nothing to touch the RX1.

If you thought Sony's 20-megapixel, $600 Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 raised the bar for point-and-shoot cameras, wait until you get a look at the RX1. The $2,800 camera is the first full-frame point-and-shoot, and includes a fixed 35mm f/2 lens and 24-megapixel sensor. DPReview calls the RX1's image quality "excellent," and says it's "a camera you can really love," in spite of an autofocus speed that's "not fast enough for moving subjects" or "'decisive moment' street shooting." DigitalCameraInfo was also disappointed with the RX1's autofocus performance, calling it "slow and inconsistent," but praised its image quality as being "similar [to] full-frame cameras such as the Canon 5D Mark III and Nikon D600," making it a good second camera for well-heeled pros who don't need such trivial things as zoom lenses or autofocus, and want a small camera to complement their full-frame DSLR.

Read the full review →It’s a genuinely great camera with a few flaws. The real issue is that it lacks the flexibility most advanced shooters would want from their primary setup, but is priced far beyond what most people would consider reasonable for a backup.
Read the full review →The Sony RX1 is the best compact camera on the market, hands down. With a full-frame sensor, excellent image quality and a robust build, it's designed for the discerning photographer with very padded pockets.
Read the full review →It definitely feels special, its images are special too and, save for slightly slow autofocus, so-so battery life and some chromatic aberrations in shots, the majority of moans are mere nitpicks. It's a masterpiece with just one or two stray brushstrokes.
