Conclusion: Wait to buy

Critics are calling the Bravia X900 series "the best TV we've ever tested" (TrustedReviews) and "the best TV ever made" (TechRadar), which should help explain why we've given it a score of 90. Why, then, have we also tagged it with a "Wait to Buy" status? Quite simply because, at a price of $5,000 and up, it's still much more expensive than virtually all other current TVs, including plenty that are nearly as good. Plus, since most of that higher price is due to the fact that the X900 is an Ultra HD TV series, and there's very little Ultra HD programming currently available, we recommend waiting a while before buying any UHDTV. Prices will come down as they become more common, and some cheaper ones may well be the next "best TVs" tested by the experts -- though if you have $25,000 to spare, and you pick up the 84-inch version of the X900, we know where we'll be going for our next "Game of Thrones" marathon.

Thanks to its beautifully realised 4k capabilities, the 84X9005 is quite simply the best TV we’ve ever tested. Nothing else comes close.

With 3D, the Sony KD-84X9005 is the best TV ever made. And thanks to the quality of its upscaling, we'd even say that after a little tweaking of its processing settings it's the best TV for watching current HD sources on, too. Job done, then.

The TV ... looks a fair bit thicker than a lot of the HDTVs current on the market. As for the display itself -- that's great, as to be expected.

The picture quality was staggering, with rich, subtle colour palettes, deep contrasty blacks and – above all – astonishing detail.
