Less unusual than previous SLT cameras but still a strong contender on all fronts, particularly for value.

Moving along to the A58, this 20.1-megapixel APS-C SLT shooter feels like a solid entry-level option set to essentially update the 16.1-megapixel A57. As you'd expect, the camera is very similar in its overall profile, and comfortable to compose with, to boot.

Sony continues to march out the megapixels: the latest update to its Single Lens Translucent (SLT) series, the Alpha A58, houses a brand new 20.1-megapixel APS-C sensor at its core.

In our time with the A58, we came away with mixed impressions. On the one hand it’s a very competitive entry-level DSLR, with an attractive $599.99 kit price. ... On the other hand ... it debuts for $200 less than the A57 did, some of the most compelling features from the A57 have been cut.

We took the new a58 equipped with the revamped version of their new 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 SAM II kit zoom lens to the Natural History Museum in New York for some sample images. The lighting was a bit tricky at times, but for a $600 complete DSLR kit, it performed impressively.

Here in the Sony Alpha a58 we have another promising entry-level camera that should offer a lot of bang for your buck, and should certainly be considered alongside the offerings from the more traditional manufacturers.

The Sony Alpha A58 has a plastic front lens mount, however, on closer inspection of this camera and the A57, the next ring in is also plastic, followed by a silver metal ring on both. Sony assured us that this shouldn't cause any issues in use.

In terms of look and feel there's little to report, with the new model is essentially identical to the outgoing A57 in terms of controls and layout. One difference is that Sony has responded to customer pressure and replaced the old proprietary hotshoe with a generic example.
