Conclusion: We're mixed

Sony throws its hat into the sports camcorder ring with the appropriately-named Action Cam, and it's a fine addition to their line of cameras -- but it might not be enough to compete with established heavyweights like GoPro and Contour. It should be said outright that the Action Cam is anything but heavy, with Gizmodo calling it "aerodynamic" and "lightweight," and strapping it to your head "very comfortable," so there's no reason not to take this camera on all your adventures, especially when it passed their "waterproof test with flying colors," and as Engadget notes, the battery "fully handled a day's regular use." Where things get a little tricky for the Action Cam is the video quality itself, which Engadget found "pleasing," but Laptop Magazine was "underwhelmed" and noted that "colors were more washed-out than on other cameras, and contrast was inferior." It distinguishes itself from its competitors by being "wonderfully simple," according to Engadget, but when the GoPro Hero3 is less than $20 more and can offer superior picture quality, that might not be enough.

Has Sony swept away the competition with the Action Cam? Not quite. But as a debut into this market, it's respectable and promising. The camera does what it promises -- it lets you shoot good-quality action footage.

The Sony produces pretty decent images at a nice price, and it has that neat 720p/120fps trick. But hold off for now.

The Sony Action Cam is a solid first effort and worth its price, but some design shortcomings may be enough to put off some potential buyers.

Sony's first action camera is good. It just needs a few design tweaks and feature fixes to make it stand out even more.

If you are new to action cameras, the Sony Action Cam is a great place to start ... The new GoPro Hero3, however, is the camera to beat in the segment now, but it does come with a price premium. Overall, though, the Sony Action Cam remains competitive and is definitely worth a look.
