I thought the same thing at first. However, if you look closely where the cable meets the bud, right under the skull logo, there's a tiny 'R' and 'L'. Pretty hard to see on the black ones...but it's there. Should solve your issue.

In all honesty, I go through headphones like toilet paper. One side would stop working after 1 month unless I found the right combination of positions for the wire to be in. Some local store had these on sale for $15, so I figured I'd give it a try. The sounds is awesome and they are very durable. I may or may not have accidentally put them through the wash.
