If you have USB 3.0, FireWire 800, or eSATA on your PC, or are planning to upgrade sometime soon, go out and get one of the FreeAgent GoFlex drives. The swappable adapters will stave off obsolescence for quite a while.

Like its desktop sibling, Seagate's portable FreeAgent GoFlex drives connect to your computer using USB 3.0, and optional adapters are available to connect them to FireWire 800 or Thunderbolt ports. The maximum capacity of 1.5TB should satisfy most of your on-the-go needs. If you absolutely need more space, Western Digital's My Passport holds up to 2TB, though it lacks the FreeAgent's connectivity options.
