I saw Dave Zatz post this link on Twitter: http://www.multichannel.com/article/476897-NCTA_CableLabs_Want_Set_Tops_To_Suck_Less_Power.php First of all, it is about $#@!%&*&$ time! Second, I thought that this quote was telling: The Energy Star 3.0 specification will yield HD DVRs that consume less than half of the energy of previous-generation models -- some of which draw 40 watts or more -- while they also will provide more processing power and home-networking capabilities. NCTA also noted...

Recently I did something I'd been promising to do for a while: I cancelled my Time Warner cable TV service. I'd been thinking about it for a long time, finally came to the conclusion that while I do really like TV, I just wasn't watching enough of it anymore to justify the $100 I was spending for cable each month (I subscribed to the basic service plus HD channels and also paid a monthly fee to rent an HD-DVR). Like a lot of other people who have cut the cord, I've turned to the internet -- Hulu...

1TB drive earlier. Over the past few weeks I'd thought about springing for a TiVo Premiere -- the UI on my Scientific Atlanta box is just awful -- but for an investment of just $65 I was able increase my DVR's recording capacity ten fold. And since actually watching a TV show will be the same whatever box I use, it seemed like this was a better value for my money than any other option right now.
I got tired of running out of space -- the DVR has about 10 hours of HD recording capacity on its own -- so I finally broke down and bought this external eSata drive and was pleasantly surprised out easy it was to install. Just unplug the DVR, connect and power up the drive, plug the DVR back in, and then once it reboots it asks to format the drive. That takes about two minutes, and then you're set! Now I have about 90 hours of HD recording capacity, and am looking forward to not having to...
Any recommendations out there? The Western Digital DVR expander line seems easy enough, but reviews I've seen bring into question their reliability. Wouldn't mind building my own with an enclosure, etc...also. Looking forward to the recommendations. Thx
Hi All, I just wanted to know if anybody managed to figure any of this out or how we can check diagnostics screen etc.. FirmwareOS? Exporting Content? USB? Watchable on comp? Assuming cable manufacturer doesn't interfer?
My 8300 has a quirk that is bugging me. It occasionally (less than once an hour) blanks out the screen for 2-3 seconds. I'm not sure if it is really the 8300's fault of if it could be my TV or possibly my cable connection. I will say that the sound does NOT cut out when the video does. Here is something that is interesting: sometimes it happens during DVR playback. Anybody else have this problem? If so, any reasonable solution? Yes, I could trade it in for a new one at my cable company,...
why do dvr's suck so much? worst box ever. no discreet power, terrible terrible software (all versions). i love my directv dvr, and wish tivo dvr's were more of an option.
I had a Comcast tech over the other day and he had to get a remote out of his truck (regular remote cannot access this setting) and he changed an audio setting from Dynamic to Fixed and it made a world of difference. It seems that setting has gone back to what it was before and I need to know how to get back into my box and change that setting again. Thanks!
Cablevision has talked me out of getting a CableCARD before, what are the real cons of replacing my cable box with an CableCARD? I understand that I may lose some features like OnDemand and Interactive stuff, but as long as I get my HD channels im happy.
Has anyone been able to get an IR extender for this device? I tried calling Scientific Atlanta (aka Cisco), but they told me that they do not sell to individuals, I'd have to go through TWC. Of course TWC had no idea what an IR extender is, and they were unwilling to get one for me. Anyone have a solution?
