If you're looking for a solid, inexpensive, easy-to-use, expandable-storage music player that's sturdy enough to work out with, the SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip ticks all those boxes. It's isn’t quite a perfect package, held back by a couple of minor quirks.

With the Clip Zip, Sansa shows there are still alternatives to the iPod worth considering. This portable media player isn't as small as Apple's iPod nano or shuffle, but is cheaper than either, and includes some features that neither Apple model has, such as integration with the Rhapsody music subscription service. It also includes an FM radio, a workout timer, and a microSD card slot, which lets you add up to 32GB of additional storage. No, it won't fit on your wrist like the nano. But even with the added cost of a microSD card, it's still cheaper, and may be just the right gym companion.

The bottom line: SanDisk's tongue-twister of an MP3 player is a stupefying value and its practical clip-on design is perfect for the gym.

I'm going abroad and not bringing my Galaxy Nexus for fear of theft so I decided to buy a new MP3 player to bring along to supplement my dumbphone. This device is essentially the same as...
