When is the "best" smartphone not the best choice?
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/481/abio/abio-460.jpg
We just scored the Samsung Galaxy S4, a smartphone that critics are calling "one of the best phones you can buy," and "the best Android phone on the market right now." And, as befits a phone with such accolades, we gave the S4 a gdgt Score of 92, and awarded it a Must-have badge, as we had done with its predecessor, the Galaxy S III.
However, we could have gone the other way, and withheld the Must-have status. The fact is, as many critics... Read more →

iPhone Boredom
details
I've been the owner of every iPhone but the first one but I've reached a point where I'm extremely bored with it. This happened shortly after my iPhone 5 purchase. Although this is the best and most beautiful iPhone ever, I suddenly found myself yearning for something different. I made a rash decision and returned my iPhone 5 for an S3 only to run right back to my iPhone 5. I hated the Samsung apps and Touchwiz in general. Plus I felt a certain incompatibility to my spouse, family & friend's... Read more →

No Bluetooth 4.0 in S3
details
Overall, I'm a fan of the S3. I've had mine for about 6 months now. It has its pros and cons, but one thing has really pissed me off. No bluetooth 4.0 (low energy, aka "BLE"). The chipset can do it, sure. In fact, I've heard it has the same Broadcom chipset as the iPhone 4S. The problem is, the software isn't there. It won't even discover Bluetooth 4 devices.
Samsung is aware of the problem and has described it as a "bug", despite the fact that it was obviously a complete oversight. The S3... Read more →

Is the iPad mini a PC? No, it's a supercomputer!
details
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/473/a5di/a5di-460.jpg
According to a new report, Apple is now the world's top PC maker -- if you count the iPad as a PC. The report, from Canalys, says that Apple has a 20% share of the global PC market, having shipped 27 million computers during the 4th quarter of 2012 -- with iPads accounting for 22.9 million of those "computers."
With computer companies struggling amid competition from tablets, and even Apple seeing its high-flying stock come down to Earth as... Read more →

Which phone to upgrade to
details
I am eligible tomorrow.

My situation is that I can either keep my awful Thunderbolt until the S4 comes out in the spring, sometime.

I can get the DNA for myself, it seems the reviews are very mixed at this point.

I can take my wife's S3 and her March 2014 upgrade date and she will get the Note II for herself.

Curious what you all would do.

So, Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S III?
details
Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S III? Ok, I was one of the lucky Google I/O attendees that was handed a Galaxy Nexus phone. Thank you Google, that was seriously cool... Especially considering that (quite literally) I had planned on going to buy the Galaxy S III that night after the conference. So, after 3-4 months with the Galaxy Nexus, I have come to the conclusion that I love the phone: its great to be back on a pure nexus device, love the pogo pins for docking, etc... But, I don't like the lack of... Read more →

Windows 8 and the Myth of the All-Purpose Device
details
With the release of Windows 8 and its ecosystem of hardware near at hand, I have been thinking about the ancient (in technology years) myth of the all-purpose device. This myth is one every geek knows and dreams of. The idea of having a single device that you carry around that can meet all of the technology needs you have is one that has captured the imagination since the days of the first "portable" computers. For geeks everywhere, though, it is ultimately a dream that leaves us depressed and... Read more →

May be Time to Re-evaluate, SGS3 now $99 with New Contract
details
Heads up for those comparing HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S 3 and Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It looks like both Verizon and AT&T have reduced the price of the SGS3 to $99.99 for new contracts and $149.99/$179.99 for upgrades, respectively. At this price the SGS3 seems like quite a steal. Details:...

Is it time to consider a Sprint 4G smartphone?
details
We've scored a number of 4G LTE phones over the past few months, and for those on Sprint's network, we've felt compelled to add a warning that, until the company beefed up its LTE network, most buyers were probably better off with other options. After all, is it worth paying an on-contract price of $200 or more for an LTE-capable phone if you'll have limited access to a 4G -- or even 3G -- data network?
http://media.gdgt.com/img/products/467/a11g/a11g-640.jpg
Today, however, Sprint announced that... Read more →

Adding a category: Cases
details
Choosing a smartphone/tablet case SUCKS! It is probably the most difficult tech-product to choose. Which is gdgt's goal: helping people choose the gadget or product that is best suited for them. So, I think you should make a "Cases" category, which will be divided into sub-categories, for each device. Of course, only the popular devices, like the iPhone 4/4S, iPad 2/new iPad, Samsung Galaxy S III, another Android device (HTC One X, for example)...

On contract Galaxy S3 or no contract Galaxy Nexus?
details
So after a year on Windows Phone 7.5 I've decided to return to Android but I'm not sure which phone to get. I know the S3 is the top of the line phone right now but getting it would involve extending my Tmobile contract. I saw that google recently dropped the price of the Galaxy Nexus to $350 which is quite an attractive no contract price. Which should I go for? The most important thing for me is battery life with performance a close second. Outside of the 1GB of RAM i don't see much of a...
