Question about

Yesterday Dave and I got a chance to check out the iPhone 4 in person, so I figured we'd try to answering as many of these burning questions as we could!

Granted, there's a limit to what we can answer since no one has been provided with a device yet (i.e. we don't know how many MHz that A4 processor is, what the mAh on the battery is, what the full 4 vs. 3GS benchmarks are, etc.). But Dave and I did get to spend a pretty good chunk of time with both the white and black phones, so fire away!

From what you can tell, is the glass any different than on the 3GS? Having shattered my 3GS screen, it worries me that having both sides made of glass means twice as much of a chance of cracking it.

How do the edges feel against your hand? When holding the iPad, at times, you can feel the rough un-curved sides. Not entirely uncomfortable, but noticeable.

Is that the case with the iPhone 4?

Did you notice if the speakerphone has been improved? Are we expected to wear headphones when using FaceTime? I can't imagine they bumped the sound volume up to the likes of Nextel phones?

As great as multitasking is on my Nexus One, I feel it gets bogged down quite often. This is why I ended up going back to my iPhone. Knowing Apple's penchant for perfection, do you think multitasking will be as smooth as advertised? For example, if I'm running gps listening to pandora, and browsing the web.

With all the various antennas being consolidated into the actual side/rim of the phone to save on space, did you get any impression on the responsiveness of reception ie better then the 3g/3gs?

Is the video camera capability for the iPhone 4 professional? (Professional in the way that it's not Hollywood quality, but it goes bove and beyond your average school project or family montage video).

Were there any apps on the model Iphone 4 that used the gyroscope (like that Jenga app Steve tried out on stage)? Any word on when the multitasking-enabled apps will be released to the App Store (such as Pandora)?

Oh - a followup question. This just personal preference, but I thought the white version looked a little "cheap" from the pictures. Did you see both colors? What observations did you have? No offense to those who didn't like the white version intended. To each their own - right?!

The most interesting part of the iPhone 4 to me is the new screen. Obviously the pixel density is pretty amazing but Gruber also mentioned the new manufacturing process for the screen brings the LCD closer to the surface of the glass, effectively fusing the touch layer with the LCD. Beside the advantage of preventing any dust accumulation Gruber said that it increased the viewing angle of the screen making it more like a glossy magazine than a typical screen. Did you notice this as being the case, or is it more an effect of the pixel density and the IPS display that makes it look so good.

Another question I have that I would like to hear some speculation on if this manufacturing process is a big deal is if others can replicate it. I have no plan to buy the iPhone, I am a fan of the openness of Android and trust that it will be getting the polish it needs in the near future (with the hiring of a certain Palm UI designer). Apple obviously makes some amazing advancements though that I want to see in future competing handsets. So my question is can they patent this manufacturing process preventing companies like HTC from utilizing it. There are clearly already lawsuits underway for other more OS related disputes, but I would really hate to see these advancements not being adopted for fear of litigation in competing handsets. So what do you think?

After attending Google I/O and leaving with an EVO which will be getting Froyo, I just thought that device and OS were cutting edige / revolutionary / game changing. I don't feel that way about iOS 4 and iPhone 4. I'm sure EVO sales will be a tiny spec after this hits stores, but what are your thoughts? Am I missing anything?

First iPhone that I sort of want. Except it's still on at&t. Guess I'll just wait it out until 2012 to see if the exclusivity agreement expires. It's kinda nice, gives Android and WinMo some breathing room. Imagine if the iPhone was available for Verizon? It would be over for my beloved WinMo.

did you get a sense of how FaceTime actually works?

does it require an actual phone call and WIFI on? that what it seems to be in the demo. No my guess is that it's not really VOIP/SIP service like skype.

If that's the case then it's way worse than Skype because you won't be able to do video call with people internationally for free.

What do you think?

How is the email? They said it had threaded conversations, what's the interface for it like? How does it compare to GMail?

Also, did you try support for multiple exchange accounts? Can I choose which parts of the exchange accounts are sync'd? For example, can I sync contacts from one account, calendar from another, and email from both?

Ryan, great liveblog yesterday and great Nerdist podcast last night. A few Qs if you know the As:
1. I see your above response about not knowing for sure about the antenna yet, but from the people you talked to at WWDC -- Apple employee or otherwise -- have you heard anything about whether the antenna around the unit improves 3G reception? I find it hard to believe that Apple didn't do this to improve reception, and yet the Apple website doesn't brag about improved reception.
2. Do you know of any iOS 4 features that only work on the iPhone 4, not the 3GS, other than the obvious features that rely on the iPhone 4 hardware such as the front-facing camera and flash? And a related question, are there any features that seemed to work much better on the iPhone 4 than the iPhone 3GS, other than the overall feeling of being "snappier than the 3GS" as you note in a comment?
3. Did you have a chance to try out the still or video camera? I'm curious how much better it is in low light and how the video camera compares to a Flip.
Thanks, Ryan!

Is there a way to tell if FaceTime is going to work before you try? For instance, does that "FaceTime" button on the contact show up even if that contact doesn't have iPhone 4? Does it check if the other party is on WiFi? If not, and if that button is present in every contact or during every phone call, I imagine endless disappointments and error messages!
