Question about

Worth Selling?

I've got a PS3, and a bunch of games for it that I do enjoy playing.

However, I've also got an Xbox 360, with a much larger amount of games. And the need for a new laptop.

Is it worth sacrificing a PS3 that I use once in a while for Blu-Rays, and exclusive games, for a couple hundred bucks towards a new MacBook?

Tough question to answer. I always find that with selling used tech, I never seem to get as much money as I want for it. If it still has some use to you (even if it just becomes a glorified blu-ray machine), that's still probably worth more than what you'll get for selling it. You might not even break even on selling a used PS3 and buying a standalone blu-ray player.

Considering I can find a decent used PS3 for around $175, I'd say just hold on to it unless you're absolutely never going to use it ever again.

Step 1: Get rid of your Xbox, sell all the old games that you've already beaten or haven't played in 3+ months if you simply can't get rid of it. There are sales at gamestop that you can get as much as 50% more than just the "trade-in value" for the game or accessory. Not that the trade in value is ever a fair value, but you can get rid of everything in one shot instead of dragging it out for months trying to get $10 for a game instead of $5. When selling the system, you've now saved yourself from paying $50 a year and from being confused on which system to buy new games for, since they play all the same games.

Step 2: Realize that selling 5+ year old tech isn't going to help you buy a brand new, top of the line laptop. Also, having a lot of games doesn't mean they are valuable. Go on ebay and look at how many people are selling systems with tons of games.

Step 3: Play PS3 online for free and be happy that you now have more space in your living room. You can still watch blu rays on it too!

Step 4: Never buy 2 consoles in the same generation again, ever. The only exception would be the people who bought a Wii right away or for their kids. Those people needed a proper HD console.

Personally, I'm not sure that you'd get enough to put a serious dent in the cost of a MacBook. Although, I guess it depends on how much gear you have in total (extra controllers, games, etc.) that could be bundled with the sale of the system.
