My 5th Gen iPod video is on it's way out (possibly already dead). Thought I'd poll the gdgt masses for some help before I throw it away (in an environmentally safe way, of course)
Symptoms:
* It doesn't turn on and does nothing when I plug the power cable in
* Holding menu and middle button causes it to beep three times (high low high) but no display
* Once in a blue moon holding menu and middle button turns it on! everything is good............
* .... but after a few days of use it, it dies again and won't come back to life.
What I've tried:
* Resetting the ipod as suggested here support.apple.com/kb/TA24040?viewlocale=en_US -- no use
* Changing the battery with an ifixit replacement --- seemed to have made it worse (not coming back to life any more).
Some thoughts:
* dead hard drive -- but no music loss when the ipod did power up
* loose cable funky internal something --- it worked fine for 2 years; the ipod fail happened suddenly it seemed over night sometime last month
* no water issue (i don't think)
Not much hope but , any ideas?
Question about
won't starts beeps 3 times; works occasionally then dies again
Bit of a late response to your initial question. The hard drive sounds like it is fine, so I would suggest that there is probably a logic board issue. iFixit will set you up with a new one.
