Will Windows 8 still have three different media playing applications?

Ever since Windows XP and before, Windows has had a confusing bunch of media playing apps, both built-in to the system or available from Microsoft. The main three are Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and the Zune software.

They each have elements that are nice: Windows Media Player has good interfaces for playing and organizing media (it's also the only one that can sync with non-iPod (or Zune, for that matter) mp3 playing devices); Windows Media Center is the one you can easily navigate with a remote or D-pad, with its full-screen interface that changes your whole computer into a media device; and Zune is the only one with a marketplace ecosystem similar to iTunes.

It would be much simpler if Microsoft would just combine all of these; will they?

That's a good question. I suspect that there will still be Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center as they'll probably follow the multiple SKU model (not all SKUs had WMC). Zune software is technically 3rd party, although given Zune is discontinued it would make sense to integrate it into WMP.

Most likely 2:
1 will probably be Zune rebranded as WMP 12 (or whatever) and drop legacy WMP as we know it.
WMC will be included (since we all need a 10fGUI for our HTPC setups). thou, this may drop off. its really sad. I was looking forward to WMC7, until the whole DRM fiasco. damn cable companies ruined any hope of that acually working out. :(

Also, Zune was (and still is) a seperate download. Me, personally, prefer Zune over the others, and not because I own 2 Zunes and a WP7

Judging by how much time and money Microsoft are investing into MetroUI they would be crazy not to invest in Zune which uses Metro so well.

Also, in my humble opinion, the Zune software is a lot nicer to use and I would prefer see Microsoft kill WMP.
