The htc desire already has gingerbread however you will either have to update via the htc update utility or via rooting your phone and xda. You may not know there is an upgrade if your carrier you got your phone from decided not to update any further lol So yeah just go to htc website and update via the utility they have it ^^ if not root and xda, I would say root as it unlocks more possibility and usually less bloated and faster roms.

HTC Desire got updated in August (see tinyurl.com/d3fxfyh), but if your carrier did not roll it out, then the only option is to flash custom ROM. I updated to CyanogenMod in February and had Gingerbread ever since. Highly recommend it.

If you want Gingerbread or even Ice Cream Sandwich: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1355660 then you will have to root your phone. There are many guides on the internet and YouTube into how to do this so I would suggest looking through a few of those first. However In followed this guide: theunlockr.com/2010/06/07/how-to-root-the-htc-desi... and it worked for me but bear in mind that I am quite knowledgeable in the techonology industry. If you were to root your phone remember it voids the warranty but it can be unrooted to reinstate the warranty. But to get Gingerbread without your carrier pushing it to you is impossible without rooting.
