wifi MAC address "not available"

the galaxy s (i don't know about other android phones) seems to be plagued with a wi-fi problem: after rebooting it, sometimes the wi-fi won't start, or it will start, find no router, and turn-off again. when looking in settings, you find that "MAC address" appears as "unavailable". rebooting it again, or doing anything won't solve it.
this has happened to me 3 times already. in different forums the only solution i have found is to reboot the phone to its factory state. it works, but it means backing up every app and setting manually, in case you want your configuration back after doing it.
Does anyone know of any other solution for this?

Occasionally I'll experience wifi problems with my Galaxy S as well, although they aren't exactly as you've described. I'll turn on wifi via the notification pane, and rather than connecting it will just keep using the HSPA network. If I go into wireless settings it says "error" underneath "Wi-Fi" where it usually says the wireless status.

Sometimes if I hit the checkbox to the right it will say "turning on" and connect, and sometimes it will just throw another error. If I toggle airplane mode off and on it usually fixes it.

I wonder if our problems are somehow related.
