why Siri is not available on every iOS 5 device?

OK, apple has confirmed this, the Siri features will only be available on the iPhone 4S!

Now, I don't understand the reason behind this!

We understand this is a technology that uses a lot of processing power to be able to recognize voice and translating it into actions, but first, I don't mind to wait a few secs to get results from Siri, and second, it could be easier to recognize text input and it could be made in every iOS 5 out there to get things done.

Well that's some thoughts, what you got?

We don't really know the technical details, but I guess it needs to utilize a full core (or a large percentage of one) in the dual core A5 chip. There's also the rumor that it requires potentially more RAM as well (and that the iPhone 4S comes with 1GB -- though we won't know for certain until someone gets their hands on it).

But it's especially perplexing that it isn't on the iPad 2. It has an A5 processor.

Of course, the more cynical argument is to simply say that Apple just needs a reason to upsell you a new phone. (I don't necessarily agree with this -- it's not like they have any trouble selling phones as it is, and their profit margins are greater than any other tech company.)

With Chpwn's release of Spire and the proxies that followed showing that Siri will in fact run on a wide variety of iOS devices I think it has been shown most of the hardware limitation arguments are moot. There are countless videos showing Siri running perfectly on an iPhone 4 and acceptably on older devices.

Other than Apple reserving the software for the phone they want to sell the most there is one other explanation: servers. If they don't feel they have an adequate backend with servers to handle the millions of extra requests they'd be getting if Siri was available on a wider range of devices they would limit it to a single device. This seems to be the most likely reason to me.

I'm fully expecting the jailbreak community to find a way to turn on Siri for the iPhone 4 and iPad 2. :)

To put it simply, Apple wants you to buy the 4s. It's a sleazy move on their part if you ask me as the many people whom purchased the 4 at full price are left out in the cold on this one unless they want to drop $600 or so on a new phone at full price. And please don't say it's a hardware issue as siri existed as an app on the app store before apple acquired the company. It's Apple's way of forcing anyone who wants siri to buy a new phone, even if it's at full price.

Siri's orginal creators explained they had cut features to have it run on the 3GS acceptably.

I would not expect it to be on the iPad 2 as Siri usfulness is limited on the iPad compared to the iPhone.

as every one else points out the hardware requirements but really they needed another feature that would separate the 4s from 4.

a couple people i have asked are actually wanting the 4s for Siri more than the processor or the camera. i was honestly rather surprised when they told me. Siri to me was a nice to have i hadn't thought of it as all that big a deal.

The iPhone 4s only has 512mb of RAM. They just want to give people a reason to buy the 4s.
