Question about

why is wireless such a pain?

one day it finds the network perfect. The next day it doesn't. The day after that it sees the network but dhcp is being a biotch. Any good suggestions on maintaining a good wireless connection day to day, and reboot after reboot.

I know 9.1 > 7 but with Windows 7 I don't have any problems!

On a serious note, do you have the correct drivers, and if you do, are they drivers that have been developed correctly or just thrown together from other drivers that "works for the most part".

Reboot the router?

I've never had any problem with wireless networks under Ubuntu. It's very possible that you have a failing NIC.

I know in the past I've had issues. I used to have an atheros wireless card, which had homebrew drivers before it was supported out of the box. Another time it was a lose connection, where I had to reseat my wireless card.

that really bugged me. in the end i just got so fed up with it that I uninstalled it. Ubuntu 8 worked much better at finding the network.

That does not sound like a software driver issue. I think the problem is hardware or environmental in your home.

You did not describe the hardware. Is the wireless client a laptop computer? Is this client the only system in your home having wireless trouble?

I would bring in another wireless client into the house like another laptop. How well do it work with your router?

Try walking through your home, from the point of outage to the wireless router. Does quality improve? Do you have walls between the router and the client? Is there any sort of electronic interference in your home like a flakey or failing wireless telephone setup?

Good luck.

it is a laptop. We have 5 laptops in the house as well as various game systems. The laptop I am referring to dualboots windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10, and it connects perfect in windows 7. I've also tried it with no security on the network and that didn't solve anything. Some of it seems like it could be software though, because every so often the wireless card isn't even listed. But it is an atheros device, so it may take a lil driver hunting.

I have a laptop with an atheros 5001 wireless card and I have been having trouble with it. It worked out of the box however a few days later it just died. So even with a clean install i'm still fighting to get it to work. But i found a driver I believe will work so wish me luck.
