Why is the iPhone 4's camera app so slow to load up?

Has anyone else noticed that the iPhone 4 is ridiculously slow to load up camera apps? It basically takes like 5 - 10 seconds for the shutter screen to open up. Seriously, I think there's been a number of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs that I've missed because of it.

Any thoughts on what could be happening and why this could be so slow? This happens on both jailbroken / non-jailbroken iPhone 4's with empty and full camera rolls / photo albums.

My guess is that the camera app uses a lot of memory and iOS is saving the state of open apps. I normally get the same load time for the camera app as you (5-10 seconds). I just closed all the apps on my phone and then tried starting the camera app: 2 seconds.

It's not just the built-in app, it's any camera app. I hear you, it's pretty frustrating. I've starting closing background apps regularly, and that has sped up the launch of camera apps. I'm jailbroken and use RemoveBG to close all backgrounded apps all at once.

In my experience the camera on my iPhone 4 gets slower over time, if I nuke my phone and start from fresh the camera is quicker, then after a couple weeks as more cruft accumulates, the camera slows down.

I'm pretty sure it's due to the GPS location it's gathering. Since the iPhone has geotagging on its pictures, it has to wait for the GPS signal to get acquired so it can accurately tag the photo.

Main cause for any type of general UI slowdown is number of installed apps/backgrounding apps. It's particularly evident in the loading of the camera app.

I love Camera+, but it does not load quicker than the built in camera app.

Really? My iPhone 4's camera is normally really fast, much faster than my friend's Droid X and my Samsung Focus.

Try Camera+ App instead. It loads really quickly.

I reset my phone a couple days ago because it was getting horrible battery life and that was the best solution they could come up with at the Genius Bar. I've kept the number of Apps I put on it to a minimum this time but I have put on some of the usual suspects as regards photography Apps. In addition to the built-in Camera App I have Camera+, Instagram, Photoshop Express, Everyday & Flickr which I use regularly to take pictures. Since the reset, they ALL start more quickly but the speed up in the Camera App & Instagram is most noticeable.

Here's an alternative approach: when too many photos and low storage space available seems to slow the Camera App down, clean up! Copy the iPhone's DCIM folder to your computer (using USB sync cable), then delete the photo and movie files in those DCIM folders, and your speed is returned, detailed at:
