Why is the Eee Slate EP121 selling at above the retail price and climbing?

It was on sale in Amazon at $1099, plus international delivery. But then was suddenly withdrawn and replaced with other vendors selling this above the retail price (again plus delivery) and as high as nearly $2000. The only one available for international delivery is the smaller 32GB version now.
Are Asus restricting supply or just cannot make them fast enough? They are not making much noise as other tablets, but seem to be commanding such high prices. I also note I have not been able to obtain any retailer that has even heard of it locally (Australia).

I doubt it was withdrawn, sounds like Amazon or what ever vendor selling it through Amazon at the $1,099 price point sold out and then someone else selling it at $2,000 thought they'd try their luck and see if anyone bites at that price. Asus isn't restricting the supply to somehow make more per unit, they just probably haven't scaled up production enough to keep their sales channels reliably stocked. I suggest waiting a few days/weeks until Amazon gets it back in stock, definitely don't deal with a vendor trying to sell the thing for $900 above the suggested retail price.

I was just at my local Harvey Norman Store and they told me that Asus are not being to make fast enough to meet demand. Asus did not expect the Eee Slate to sell well at all.

Can anyone tell me why a device as amazing as this is only available through Harvey Norman who clearly do not understand the commercial demand for such a device? Are ASUS serious? Harvey Norman? I bought one, realised its potential, the went back to buy a half a dozen more, forget it, several calls later , head office HN, no help, (no stock at any store in australia) then ASUS direct, no help, HN exclusive deal, no help. I cant believe that a manufacturer would allow the loss of potentially the closest threat to ipad2 to HN??? Please, help me , where can we buy these?

This slate is in very high demand (relative to UMPC's) and very short supply (relative to tablets). If I had to guess, I'd say they're experiencing difficulty acquiring LCD panels. Monitor Amazon daily and pounce on the EP121 when you find it in stock. I monitored Amazon for two weeks. When Amazon said J&R had it in stock, I went to ShopDiscover and clicked their J&R affiliate link (5% cashback) and then purchased the EP121. J&R was charging $50 over MSRP, but I got $57 cash back.

A new model will be coming out in the near future, but it's not worth waiting for. Rumor has it the specs will be nearly identical except for a secure instruction set that is useful for IT.
