Why is burning optical media in OS X such a royal pain?

I need to burn a DVD with photos for a friend. So I throw a DVD-R into my optical drive, drag the files over and click burn. After a few minutes processing the data, I get an error returned that says, "The disc can't be burned; it might be incompatible with this disc drive. Please try a different brand on disc, or try burning at a slower speed."

This happens using DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-R/DL, TDK or Memorex. There's no rhyme or reason. To top it off, the disc gets stuck and causes the drive to crash. The only way I can eject my disc is to restart the computer and hold the eject button down during bootup.

At this point I think I may have a hardware problem. But it's pretty annoying! I feel like trying to burn anything in OS X has always been a huge ordeal.

Apple is notorious for having faulty DVD drives, I see this all the time. Also, DVDs are fickle too..

Have you tried burning at a slower speed? If that doesn't work you might want to contact AppleCare.

Optical drives is yet another thing that Apple sticks in their machines which, 180 to what His Steveness says, I suspect are other manufacturers' rejects.

It could be the media - but I'm more inclined to suspect the drive, as I've come across this before and it's turned out to be a failing drive every time, although it's not always been diagnosed the first time around. A Store visit is probably in order.

I had to have the SuperDrive in my MBP replaced about 6 months after I got the machine. There seem to be pretty consistent build quality issues with these drives.

Tried it another time and got this error: "The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
