Question about

Why does this have to be released with 3g??? 3G in a phone makes sense because its small and ultra portable you can almost use it anywhere.

With a tablet I dont see that being the case. Every time I think of where I'd be using a tablet/small laptop its some where with wifi. and in the slim chance I do need 3g I can tether it to my phone. Also a wifi version will defiantly be cheaper than buying this out of contract.

I just want a wifi version, no 3g necessary for me. What about you???

Figured this thread needed an update. WiFi only supposedly coming out ahead of the 3G launch. If not, I am feel confident it will launch soon after. Motorola execs are pretty savvy and would be watching the success of the WiFi only iPad being sold through Verizon IMHO and would want other carriers to offer it.

I am sure that Motorola / Verizon subscribe to the business model of making a device available for multiple customer bases. By sectioning the new device off as an LTE only device, you would alienate a large customer base that may purchase the device if it were available as a 3G model.

A WiFi only option is the wildcard, because there are customers who will not buy a device if they are required to purchase one on contract only; therefore, the companies will have contracts between themselves to facilitate that.

The bigger question is have ANY of the Android tablets from top tier manufacturers been announced to be available in WiFi-only configuration?

And if not, then why the heck not?! Isn't the WiFi iPad the biggest seller?

I've been using my iPad WiFi + 3G all over, including the middle of parks and Chicago trains where there is no WiFi. To be honest, I like Apple's approach of offering a 3G-less model in addition to the dual-mode model, but I wager that's an expensive route. Maybe Motorola is just trying to save some cash.

3G has been invaluable for me. I commute an hour on the train and use it constantly. Wifi only / tethering is certainly an option, but i tend to actively use multiple devices and tethering really kills the phone's battery.

I forgot about the "Google requires 3G for the Marketplace" point that you mentioned. That's certainly a sticking point, and a weird decision.

While I like my 3G, I certainly understand the use cases where some folks just don't need it. Maybe Google can be persuaded to change its policies.

If Google doesn't show signs of changing soon, though, would a Wi-Fi only iPad, or perhaps the inevitable iPad 2, be an option for you?

I almost bought my parents a 3g iPad when they went back east to visit my uncle and aunt. They live way out in the country where they only get slow dial up, and I figured my Mom would like to check her e-mail while they were there. I just didn't think of it far enough in advance to get it set up and then make sure my Mom knew how to use it.
