Why does this have to be released with 3g??? 3G in a phone makes sense because its small and ultra portable you can almost use it anywhere.
With a tablet I dont see that being the case. Every time I think of where I'd be using a tablet/small laptop its some where with wifi. and in the slim chance I do need 3g I can tether it to my phone. Also a wifi version will defiantly be cheaper than buying this out of contract.
I just want a wifi version, no 3g necessary for me. What about you???
Figured this thread needed an update. WiFi only supposedly coming out ahead of the 3G launch. If not, I am feel confident it will launch soon after. Motorola execs are pretty savvy and would be watching the success of the WiFi only iPad being sold through Verizon IMHO and would want other carriers to offer it.
This is another plus of Apple's approach, if you ask me. 3G service is optional, even on the 3G model, so you get a choice of when to turn it on and which model you want. I don't get why Google is forcing these tablets to get anchored down by a carrier, it makes no sense, unless the carriers are just forcing Google's hand into it and they're not putting up a fight.
I am sure that Motorola / Verizon subscribe to the business model of making a device available for multiple customer bases. By sectioning the new device off as an LTE only device, you would alienate a large customer base that may purchase the device if it were available as a 3G model.
A WiFi only option is the wildcard, because there are customers who will not buy a device if they are required to purchase one on contract only; therefore, the companies will have contracts between themselves to facilitate that.
How this relates to Motorola, I am unsure as well. Any details on model availability is purely speculation until Motorola makes an official announcement around this topic.
My personal opinion: It would be smart for Motorola to offer the device as WiFi only, and I hope they do. We will all see in the coming days though.
none of them have and the longer CES goes on the more 3g/4g models get announce. I forgot one major issue which is that google doesnt allow the market on none 3g tablets thus killing it all together
I've been using my iPad WiFi + 3G all over, including the middle of parks and Chicago trains where there is no WiFi. To be honest, I like Apple's approach of offering a 3G-less model in addition to the dual-mode model, but I wager that's an expensive route. Maybe Motorola is just trying to save some cash.
3G has been invaluable for me. I commute an hour on the train and use it constantly. Wifi only / tethering is certainly an option, but i tend to actively use multiple devices and tethering really kills the phone's battery.
That all depends. I mean if the ipad 2 is priced starting at $400 then I might get one. Honey comb was way more then i expected it to be. and there is a new rumor that the xoom will have a wifi version possibly before the 3g.
I'm betting the low end iPad 2 will sell for $599, with the low end iPad 1 remaining in its $499 position. They really can't drop the price very much. Although, the iPhone 3gs is now $50 on contract. But that's because AT&T wants to trap you in a 2 year contract just before Verizon starts selling the iPhone.
Ya thats why as long as the eepad transformer gets stock Hcomb I'll probably get that. cuz stock hcomb seems better IMO then iOS and it starts at $400 w/ a keyboard or $500 i forget. but still cheaper than the ipad
I almost bought my parents a 3g iPad when they went back east to visit my uncle and aunt. They live way out in the country where they only get slow dial up, and I figured my Mom would like to check her e-mail while they were there. I just didn't think of it far enough in advance to get it set up and then make sure my Mom knew how to use it.
