Make sure your iTunes is up-to-date.
In iTunes on the top navigation bar select Help -> Check for Updates
If that still doesn't work, try uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it (download from the apple website).
Alternatively, if you are on iOS version 5+ on your phone, you should be able to connect to a WiFi network and then go into Settings -> General -> Software Update

I would guess that your internet connection is spotty, hence the timeout. Another cause is if you're connected via WiFi, another possible cause might be weak WiFi signal.
