Why does Apple's Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse sometimes automatically pair with random nearby computers? (And how does one prevent and fix this issue?

)

I've seen this issue a number of times -- enough that I've become convinced it's not a fluke. We run almost almost entirely Macs here at the office, and upon occasion I'll come into work and my Apple Wireless Keyboard simply won't connect with my machine, usually because it'll somehow be paired with another computer that it's never connected to before. (And yes, you can definitely rule out pranking -- read on.)

I've seen this happen in a number of instances; this morning it was with a MacBook Pro that had no Bluetooth keyboard pairings of any kind and that was sleeping (it woke up when I started typing). One time I also saw the keyboard re-pair with another MacBook Pro that happened to be booting off the OS X install DVD at the time, and which also had never paired with Bluetooth keyboards in the past. We've also seen a Magic Mouse mysteriously pair with another MacBook Pro it had no previous relationship with.

All in all I've seen at least four or more machines become mysteriously and erroneously paired with Apple Bluetooth keyboards and mice for no apparent reason and without any user intervention. The nature of these occurrences and the number of machines and peripherals we've seen it affect says to me that there is some pretty funky stuff happening at low levels in Apple's Bluetooth stack; since I have no idea how widespread this issue actually is I'm trying not to get too freaked out by the security concerns here, but this is obviously way outside the realm of how Bluetooth is intended to work (i.e. with secure, encrypted device pairings).

As background, when trying to re-pair an affected keyboard to its intended machine, the Mac only sometimes finds the keyboard, and almost always the pairing doesn't work. Here's the latest console log:
blued / Apple Bluetooth daemon started
Bluetooth Setup Assistant / starting pairing
Bluetooth Setup Assistant / Pairing failed with '[ID]': error 0x4

The final two log entries will repeat each time as many times as I try to pair; when the improper pairing happened this morning I had to completely shut down the Mac the keyboard was erroneously paired to, pull the batteries on the keyboard, attempt repairing a half dozen times on the correct target machine (while rebooting a couple of times) before I got the keyboard and Mac back in working order. Brutal.

Any ideas?

With the apple remote you can specifically pair it to your specific computer, but if you don't the default setting is to control the nearest Mac. It might be something similar with the magic mouse and wireless keyboard, but I don't have either so I can't be sure.

Have four macs and two wireless keyboards and magic mouse and trackpad. No problems like this seen, but would get in touch with apple support 24hr turnaround.
