Why do we need to blow on the games and why do the games mess up?!?

This weekend my brother in law came to my house and we broke out the NES to play some Double Dribble. The game (as many of the older games) is awesome and never gets old!

When I first put it in the system and fired it up, I got the blinking light :/ took it out and preformed the usual hot air blowing procedure.

About 4 years ago my wife surprised me and bout me a NES for xmas. I was so excited. I went and bought a brand new 72 pin connector. I figured a new connector would fix the problem, but it didn't... can these things ever work without flaw? :(

Honestly, there's an easier way...

Put in game, turn on NES .. if you get flashing screen/one color just slowly wiggle the cart side to side (with the NES on) until you get a change

Reset NES, good to go =)

I replaced the 72 pin connector in my old NES and it worked fine. Maybe your replacement pin connector was bad?

dude, to get mine to work, I have to position the cartridge just right, blow on it, tap it on the side, spank it, push the power button 10+ times, and pray...

I've never replaced anything and I can always make it work... some games just take longer than others.... I still love it though...

Dang I've thought about getting a new 72 pin connector for mine...probably won't now.

Battletoads was always the trickiest on mine. The ten+ minutes you spend trying to get the game to work is part of the fun of the NES :)

I still have an my original NES from 85 and it still works (and I still love it), never replaced anything, and mostly I can put a game in and it works, sometimes it needs a little blowing, on the rare occasion I have to jiggle it and get it positioned correctly to make it work, but rarely do I have one that simply doesn't work.

The fiddling is part of the nostalgia for the NES are part of what made it such a great platform. If you don't like it, find an emulator for your pc and at least play the awesome games that were available for the console.

My NES and games had been stored away in a box: reading these comments has spurred me to pull the system out of storage and play some Contra! :-)

I don't think that NES would feel the same without the fiddling. The sound of the drawer engaging and disengaging repeatedly will forever be lodged in my subconscious... That, and the sound of a dial-up modem connecting, but that's another story altogether.

I think the blowing on games part was probably contributing to the problem as it creates moisture and can rust the contacts. I didn't realize that at the time, I just wanted to be cool like the other kids, so the cartridges would get a nice huff of air from me. Sad to say my NES has become an amalgam of unusable parts, since it stopped working and I had no internets when I was younger and decided to give it a go and take it apart. DIY fail...

Oh and Nintendo found that the sideloading of the cartridges also contributed to the problem and from then on it designed its consoles with cartridges that loaded from the top.

I always thought the blowing air on the cartridges and connectors was a myth - but I do it anyway and it always worked...
