Why do random Android apps seem to be running in the background all on their own?

Currently I am using Advanced Task Killer Free and if I kill all the tasks and set the phone down, when I check 20 minutes later there are 10 apps running, and they are apps that I have never ever used! Do I need a better task killer?

You actually don't need to automatically kill tasks with a task killer. The way android multitasks (as explained in this article: android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/04/multitaski...) means that background services can run without killing battery life.
