Why did you choose Canon/Nikon over the other?

I've narrowed my search for cameras down to the 550D or the D5100. I went through the reviews on DPReview and they both come very close to each other. They fit my needs and my budget perfectly so I'm ready to just order one of them. Before I do this though my last thing to check into is why someone might choose Nikon over Canon or the vice versa. For those of you who have used both or went through the same process why did you choose one over the other?

I've always chosen Canon for two reasons:
  1. Color reproduction. All of the Canon DSLR's that I have tried tend to have a more accurate color reproduction with the settings "flat" or "neutral". This is partially due to metering but mostly it has to do with the way that Canon interprets the information that hits the sensor. The Nikons that I have used tend to be skewed towards the warm end of the spectrum and sometimes the color also seems slightly washed out. If you do a lot of post-processing then this doesn't matter at all really. My goal when capturing images is to do as little post processing as possible. I love setting up and trying to find the perfect combination of angle, composition, and metering. In this case, accurate color reproduction is a big deal.
  2. Lenses. Canon glass has always been known to be of the highest quality. They have a huge range of great lenses but there are also tons of great third party lenses available. This argument isn't as strong because I have also used some great Nikon lenses.

DSLRs are a deeply personal thing and the answers you get will always be subjective. For example. I actually find Nikons to be rather uncomfortable in my hand, but others swear by their ergonomics. In these cases, it's better to go to a store, pick them up and go with your gut.

Hah, I picked Nikon because I liked their ergonomics and back panel button placement much better than Canon. I also like how much I can crank them and get some insane colors. The second issue was glass.

Canon has some great primes, fantastic even. There probably isn't anyone who makes better primes for DSLRs. But I'm more into the versatility of zooms. Nikon's 12-24mm, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm VR lenses are some of the best zooms on the market! (Granted, your average amateur photographer probably isn't going to be picking these up any time soon.)

Though as others have mentioned, friends played a big part as well. A lot of my friends shoot Nikon, so we all swap and borrow each others' cameras and lenses from time to time. Comes in handy!

That said, the Canon 5D Mark II has been the first camera in a long time to make me consider leaving Nikon. Hoping they eventually release a Nikon D800 and step up their game.

First off, let me make it clear that I have never personally owned a DSLR before, but I have considered buying one before and in my browsing process I have done a lot of research on the subject of Nikon vs. Canon. I also work for a newspaper and have used both camera brands (both P+S and DSLR cams) and can tell you this: Nikon's, in my opinion, usually take slightly better photos. Canon's, however, I think take much better video. That's how I see it.

If you are deciding between the 550D (aka the T2i) and the D5100, I would honestly recommend the D5100. The D5100 has a maneuverable screen (which the 550D does not), and I have ALWAYS found those to be helpful. The only reason I would buy the 550D over the D5100, is that the 550D is lighter.

Hope that helps!

I started with a Nikon...a D40x, I think. I found it really light and easy to use. The reason it was so light is that the AF wasn't in the body, it was in the lens and not every lens had autofocus. Sometimes, I'd end up paying more for a lens that had autofocus.
When it was time to upgrade, I went with a Canon T2i because of it's features and that AF was built-in (though, IS isn't and you have to lenses that have it..so, it's a trade off, I guess). Also, my friends had Canons so we could swap lenses and 'try before you buy' with new stuff

I think the key thing for me was handling both the Canon and the Nikon I was considering and seeing which one felt the most comfortable in my hands. The Canon seemed to fit me better, so I went that way.
That sounds a little trivial but I was going from a Point and Shoot to my first DSLR and so the main factor controlling the quality of my photos was always going to be me, not the feature set. of the camera. Still is of course!

I began shooting film with Nikon (borrowed from my dad), and went Canon with DLSR as their bodies were better early on. That said, I do envy the performance of the D700 and the incomparable Nikkor 14-24mm zoom. Canon has no answer to that lens. I don't think you will regret going Nikon. Not that I am throwing my 5D MkII away in disgust . . . ;)

I use neither (at least anymore) but something else to consider is do you have close friends with one brand or the other? Sharing lenses is a great resource! Just something to consider.
That said back in the day I purchased Canon over Nikon, but it was before I knew much about cameras. Basically my reasoning was 1) I got a better deal on the Canon 2) The rebel felt better in my hands than the equivalent Nikon at the time.

Enjoy whichever you choose! :)

I originally chose canon for the video of the 5D mkII (I ended up with the 7D due to price). I have played with my friend's Nikon since I got my camera and don't like the way it felt. Also, I haven't done a ton of searching but I feel like the community for canon is a lot bigger which has helped me learn a lot... for instance, Vimeo video school ( vimeo.com/videoschool ) seems to be done completely on canon.

Personally, I chose a Nikon mainly because close personal friends and family also shoot Nikon. If I ever wanted to borrow a lens, flash, or other accessory, I could try it before I buy it. In addition, the camera just felt like a better fit in my hand -- ergonomics, menu system, buttons locations, etc.

I had also been in the same fix for a very long time. Even i had zeroed in on these two cameras. I chose nikon over canon for the basic reason that i needed to click pictures instead of taking videos from my dslr. The canon might or might not have been better in video recording but the d5100 scores decently well in that segment too and I didnt really feel that the d5100 cannot take good videos..it really can. It suits my needs and yes, its really good as a camera.

I used to be a Canon DLSR guy but switched to Nikon. Why? When I picked up the D200 years ago, it just felt right. The ergonomics, the menus, the feel of the camera. My advice is to go to a store where you can try both out - you need to get hands-on time with both cameras before making a decision.

I picked Canon over Nikon due to the fact that a friend of mine owned a Canon, and I could borrow his lenses. After that it was a matter of budget and how it felt on my hand.

I think I'm a little bit late, but I think my opinion might still be useful to somebody. Well I've always been a big fan of photography. Time ago I had Canon AE 1 program, which is a great analog camera. After that I decided to buy a DSLR, and bought a Canon 550d on 2010. I bought it, maybe because I already knew Canon, and as a matter of fact this is a FANTASTIC camera, besides it takes great photos, its quality really surprised me: I took it to niagara falls and recieved lots of water, and I dropeed it one day (obviously was an accident) about 2 mts, and absolutelly nothing happened to my cam.
Well it was a real love story, But someday i made a "mistake", and took a Nikon D5100 on my hands and it was love at first sight. Let me tell you I know nothing about Nikon, I had'n even considered it. To me Canon was my only option but now I'm buying my Nikon on January. Its low light performance, and image quality is a lot better than canon 550D , and even though Nikkor lenses are expensive to hell I think thei're a lot better. The way you feel it in your hands, so comfortable, so nice, is something you have to experience yourself.
I hope Nikon's quality is as good as Canon.
Let me know at the end, what camera did you choose.
