Why can't I play 3D games on my iPad(1st gen) running iOS 5.0.1?

I did a test on my iPad(1st gen) playing a few 3D games(GTA 3, Infinity Blade II, etc). Every time I started playing one, the app would crash due to low memory(iOS crash reporter). When I started the same games on my factory reset iPad they would play run fine. The iPad also felt 'faster'. So why is this happening? Is it because of Springboard? iCloud? Push notifications? iOS 5 in general?

Please don't say to 'close running apps' because I did, but we all know that doesn't mean anything.. (speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-...)

On my normal configuration I have about 350 apps installed

I'm really not looking for a fix for my current configuration, I'll just do a factory reset. All I want is an explanation..

UPDATE: I found the main problem: It all has to do with IOS's caching of app icons in the homescreen. From Epic's Mark Rein on Infinity Blade 2's crashing on iDevices with insufficient memory.

"For example if you have a large number of apps installed iOS must cache all those icons to give you smooth performance when you hit the home button. Unfortunately the machines we tested on didn't have massive numbers of apps installed on them so we think this how we think we missed this particular condition." kotaku.com/5864309/the-most-popular-game-on-itunes...

So the number of installed apps do indirectly affect performance.

Are you jailbroken? If yes, then some of the apps that you install from the Install0us does create problem. Yes, that could be because of the Springboard, launch SBSettings and free up your memory and try again. Since you've said, games run fine on Factory settings (non jailbreaked)

You may want to clear you memory by soft reseting your iPad (no data is lost during the process), hold down the power and home button until the screen blanks out and the apple logo comes up. You may need to do this 2 times for this to work.
