Question about

Which do you prefer Magic Trackpad or Magic Mouse?

I'm planing to buy an iMac and they offer both options for the same price. The main use of this iMac will be for editing in Above Lightroom. Most mice feel small in my hand, making me interested in the Trackpad.
What say you?

When I had a mac mini, I preferred using the Magic Trackpad because I just couldn't stand mouse acceleration using mice on Apple computers. The Magic Mouse doesn't really help with mouse acceleration. It's super frustrating to use an Apple product because of this, but I'm perfectly fine with the Trackpad acceleration and love the gestures.

Trackpad in a walk. If you're into gestures, as I am, this is a dream product -- gives your desktop all the "swipe shortcuts" in Snow Leopard and if you download MagicPrefs (FREE), you'll get many more to have fun with. Plus, it's perfect for any HTPC -- much less awkward than using a mouse. I bought two refurbished MTs on eBay just for this purpose.

I find the Magic Mouse to be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and too small to take advantage of its one real asset, gesturing -- but if you have smaller hands than I, YMMV.

I have both, the Magic Mouse and Trackpad, and i also use it with Adobe Lightroom. I would suggest that you go with the trackpad if you're willing to go through a really short learning curve.

- The 3 finger dragging option makes the trackpad a better device for dragging objects around

- Four finger up and down swipes for <show desktop> and <expose>

- Inertial movement makes it "feel" better while working

I have a Magic Mouse, and while I like using it, I think you should get the Magic Trackpad with your iMac (I purchased my Magic Mouse way before the Trackpad was announced). The ergonomics on the Magic Mouse is not great (very flat mouse), and the surface is quite small for touch gestures using more than 2 fingers. You can then also get a separate mouse from another manufacturer that can solve some of the other issues such as acceleration (as mentioned by) and ergonomics.

Neither to be honest. I do use the Trackpad as a left-hand device on some of my Macs in addition to a mouse, while the Mice sit in their boxes. Why not just buy a decent mouse? Are the gestures that crucial?

Magic Trackpad for sure. The Magic Mouse is the second worst mouse ergonomically (first would be the hockey puck mouse).

I like the idea of the trackpad as an off hand gesture/alternate surface, but I agree that something like the Logitech MX should be your primary mousing interface.

I won't go so far as to say that Apple can't make a decent mouse, but.... well... Apple can't make a decent mouse. It is kind of sad since they popularized the mouse to begin with.

I would go for the Trackpad. The Magic Mouse is to small for me.

I have had both and decided to go Trackpad. It does take a bit of getting use to, but ultimately I like it better than the Magic Mouse.
