Question about

When you play games (e.g., First-Person Shooters) do you play inverted or standard?

I'm watching members of team gdgt play Call of Duty in the office right now and it reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask. What's your control scheme when playing first-person shooters?

For myself, I play with the Y-Axis inverted. You might say it's the video game equivalent of "natural scrolling."

Which style do you prefer?

Inverted is the only way to go. :)

Definitely standard. Inverted makes me sick.

Oh, wait, I get sick playing any FPS after 5 minutes. *sigh*

Seriously, it's taken me like 5 years to make it 10% of the way through Half Life 2 in 5 minute segments.

it's surprising to me the number of people that play inverted. I play standard because it makes sense to me. Up is up, down is down.

I play standard. Man this makes me want to install CS again. I miss me some M3 shotgun action...

I play standard. It just throws me off when I play with the Y-Axis inverted. Maybe it would be a different story if I had started playing FPS with the Y-Axis inverted.

The only time I play inverted is during flight games (maybe because some games force you to play with the Y-Axis inverted).

Straight-up for shooting, inverted for flying.

Funny, Kotaku had an article about this the other day in regards to someone inverting flight controls which completely threw the next player off.

For FPS I play inverted, so up = down and down = up.

funny you should ask this. i was playing god of war 3 today, for my 2nd run through, and forgot to set it to standard until 90% of the game was complete. i was wondering why when flying up and down the chain that held the labyrinth it was "backwards".

I just use the default settings. It's very rare that I won't quickly adapt to whatever is the default in a game.

I play inverted. It seems more natural to me. If the FPS has any flying in it even more so.

I use the default settings for the sticks except that I switch to Southpaw. For some reason my brain can't process it otherwise.

I typically play standard. Playing inverted confuses me and seems illogical.

The answer is both; On a console with a controller:Inverted. On a PC with a mouse: Standard.

I dont know why as I started playing FPS games with a PC before dual analogs. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the controller analog is a "stick" and flying games on the PC. Or its just one of the great mysteries of my brain.

I prefer standard over inverted, but there’s more to it than just that. It's just natural to me. It’s analogous to saying that I prefer writing with my right hand. While it’s true that I prefer it, it’s a disaster if I try to use the opposite. It boggles my brain but there are people who actually prefer inverted. There is no advantage either way.
