When are DROID owners eligible for new phones?

I know this is more of a Verizon question and that it all depends on when the phone was purchased, but I'm rather busy and can't find time to run to the store.

My girlfriend bought her droid not long after its launch and suspects that she'll have to wait til about November (2yrs) to be eligible for an upgrade. I want to surprise her for her birthday by buying her her upgrade in August. I've been seeing Droid owners shopping around for new phones already (May-ish) and I'm wondering exactly how many months does a Verizon customer have to wait to be eligible for their upgrade.

Thanks!

Starting month 20 I think you become eligible for upgrades. No way to tell without logging into your account.

You should be able to log into your vzw account and look if you're eligible for an upgrade. If you signed a 2 year contract, you should be eligible after 20 months. If you signed a 1 year contract, you would be eligible after 11 months.

ya.. i used to work for a sprint store and people would come in all the time and try to upgrade phones as a gift. The problem is that it involves contracts if you want subsidy discount. to get the new phone at a un-outrageous price, you will need to bring her with. If you buy the phone independently (cold) it will probably cost you close to $500. Find out when she is eligible for upgrades (VZ is usually 20 months), and take her to the store to set it up. Better yet... buy it online. probably cheaper.

Depending on her price plan, she may have been eligible in November of last year. If she wasn't then, 20 months into the contract is when she'd be eligible.

Usually, you have to fulfill the full 24 months of a contract before you are able to do an upgrade. However, if you call or go into the store, an employee might be able to get you an early upgrade, depending on how much you spend per month, your area and other factors.

I used to work for AT&T, and we'd get customers calling in to upgrade their phones before the end of their contract for whatever reason. If they spent enough, did little off network usage and didn't call all the time trying to get stuff for free, we could usually give them an early upgrade. The system calculated a customer's early upgrade eligibility, and we had no choice if it said "no." I'm assuming Verizon is very similar.

But if you and your girlfriend both have smart phones, I'm guessing you should be able to do the upgrade. You'll have to go or call in to ask to know for sure.

I bought my Droid the day they came out and I am eligible for a discount and my last NE2 on July 6th, which is exactly 20 months. This is usually the case, however, best to check the online account or in a store to be certain, cause I have seen these dates get mixed up before when I used to sell Verizon Phones.
