I'm planning on purchasing a second hand MBP from a friend. Its about a year old. What are some of the things I should check before I buy it. Also, what's a good price ?

If it's a more current model, make sure the battery still holds a decent charge, since that's not (easily) user replaceable. I would check eBay for a MBP with similar specs; that would give you the best judge of cost.

I would try to make sure that it's a unibody model, if you can, because the build quality is much better. Otherwise, make sure that the battery still holds a charge, and that the keyboard is fully functioning.

Check the MBP when it is closed. Look for dents or scratches that might have been left by a drop. Also check to ensure that the screen hasn't been bent. The deck of the MBP should be flat and even. A bad self-service can bend or break the clips that fasten the top deck of the housing around the keyboard and track pad, and an uneven deck is the visual queue of a problem. Check the screen in a dark room for uneven brightness. If possible, have the MBP checked out at the local Apple Store. Also, if your friend invested in Apple Care, that should be transferable to you.
No idea about price. Sorry.

Make sure you get the discs and be prepared to run the Hardware Diagnostic on it before you do anything with it (you boot it from the disc). If it checks out, do a full format and install of the Restore to be sure there is nothing sketchy on there. With the recent appearance of malware and the possibility that the machine could have been used for something you wouldn't want to be held responsible for, it is the only safe bet.

Thanks for the input. Its a unibody model and runs a Core 2 Duo i5 processor and the build quality seems to be excellent. No dents, cracks. It even has a "Speck case" on it.
Slightly less than one year MBP has a charge close to 5 hours (idle running time).
