What to do about battery issues on the 4S?

My dad has been having battery issues with his Sprint 16GB 4S lasting only about 4 hours on a charge, even with every service (wifi, location services, push notifications, everything but Bluetooth) turned off. He took it to the Apple Store and they wiped the phone clean (factory reset, I believe) but this hasn't helped. What is the best way to get his phone fixed? Take it back to the Apple Store and insist on battery replacement or a new phone?

Lydia, has he updated to iOS 5.1 yet? The release supposedly fixes iPhone 4S battery problems significantly better than iOS 5.0.1 did.

If he does have 5.1, short of jailbreaking the phone and installing a couple of user-created tweaks, it seems like he's done everything he can on his end and should probably demand a replacement.

Like others have stated, try these in this order. If one doesn't result with a fixed phone then try the next. #3 is worst case scenario before buying a new phone.

1. Try updating the phone with iTunes or through the settings on the phone.
2. Schedule an appointment at your closest Apple store if there is one.
3. If you are out of warranty and Apple refuses to help you: Order a replacement battery from an online seller (like ebay, look at seller ratings) and make sure it comes with the pentalobular screw driver so you can take off the back glass (the two bottom screws next to the charging port have a pentalobular head). Once you remove the back glass (it slides up about 1/4 inch and then pulls straight off) there are two small Phillips head screws holding the battery in place.

I'm not sure if they'll give you a replacement phone for battery problems as I believe I've seen they've been instructed to tell people to wait for a software fix. However, there have been two firmwares released since then which are supposed to fix the battery problems and they haven't worked.
If you have any other problems with the phone, they might replace it. I had mine replaced yesterday because the power button stopped working, but the battery life seems to be exactly the same so I think it's probably a software problem.

It sounds like it is probably a bad battery, then, so I would take it back and tell them it is still happening. They should just replace it. The only thing that might account for this aside from a bad battery would be if he is in an area with incredibly bad signal strength. In a scenario like that, the phone will max out the power trying to keep a connection with the tower. I have seen this drain batteries in a matter of hours under really poor signal conditions.

The reality is, though, that all this stuff is made in China, where a 10% failure rate off the assembly line is considered a tolerable margin of error. If you think you have bad hardware, you probably do.

Just to follow up, my dad updated his phone like several of you suggested, and has seen vast improvement to the battery life. Thanks for all the help!
