What strategies do you use to get a free MicroCell from AT&T?

Our new apartment has zero cell service. AT&T will kindly sell me one for $199. This is not really ideal. How do we restore our cellphone service?

Hunger strikes? Chain ourselves to the door? Open up the tear ducts?

I'd just say you want one for free or you're shopping for other carriers. If they want to keep your business, they'll give it to you.

You need to call their tech support line several times to complain about service, they will troubleshoot and tell you that nothing is wrong. Depending on how much you pay per month, they will give you one.... the higher your monthly plan the likelier you are to get one. Also, it matters how close you are to completing your contract. The closer you are to the end, the harder they will try to keep you happy. However, it's still a roll of the dice. Call on a regular basis and be very polite to the reps, they will try to help you and make the right annotations on your account for you if you are nice, no one likes helping a rude person.

I've had three clients of mine simply hound AT&T for a little while until they relent. One of them got it in a single call, another took three or four, and the last one went to the store, I think.

My guess is that they don't simply give these things away because they are expensive, even to them, and if it was very easy to get one for free it would cost AT&T a good deal of money to send them to everyone who wanted a slight boost in their cell reception. "Oh, I only get 3 bars of signal in my 1-bedroom apartment, I think I'll get a microcell so I can get 5!"

Just try calling, then try going to a store. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Bummer... We actually got a notification that they'd give us one for free. We just had to go to a store to pick it up. If it makes you feel any better, I don't think it really makes that much difference most of the time. :-/

A friend of mine just called to complain and ATT told him to go to the store and pick up one for free.

I got a notice in the mail one day. I was never told why I was chosen. Maybe AT&T cared about their customers and noticed how bad service was at my house. I'm an iPhone user and this was around the time that Verizon was getting the iPhone so it may have been a ploy to keep me around. I still had a year on my contract at that time though. I'm not actually using the MicroCell. Calls are terrible enough to use my capped Comcast account for phone calls. Priorities. :-)

Our area generally has weak AT&T coverage. Called AT&T to ask when they are going to improve their signal in our are as we were considering moving to a carrier who had better coverage. They offered us up the MicroCell on the spot. BTW it works pretty well.

I live in NYC and they keep offering me stuff like microcells and accesories, as if I am about to jump ship to Verizon. Actually the service is not too bad.. Much better than T-Mobile ever was in our apartment. Maybe that's why people in NYC are not taking them up on their offers? If I could give you mine I would..
