Question about
What's the best way to adjust a laptop's monitor for optimal viewing?
About a month ago I got the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM which is an IPS monitor. I typically have my ThinkPad hooked up to the monitor with my laptop closed. In the past, I didn't really mind the "terrible" screen that many pointed out about the laptop, but ever since I got used to the IPS monitor I cringe everytime I have to deal with the whitewashed, terrible viewing angle, monitor of the ThinkPad.
How do you adjust your monitor's display to be as best as it could be? I know that the ThinkPad's monitor won't go too far since it has a terrible screen to begin with but I'd like to at least minimize the whitewashing.

The absolute best way to achieve optimal viewing on any monitor is using a Colorimeter and software to calibrate your display. Even your Dell UltraSharp should be calibrated regularly using a Colorimeter to get the best results. By calibrating both displays, the colors and brightness will match very closely and you will not be quite so shocked going from one to the other. The UltraSharp will have broader color range, and there's nothing that can improve the characteristics of the ThinkPad's display, but you would be amazed how much of a difference a Colorimeter will make.
The Pantone huey Pro is an inexpensive Colorimeter, and there are many others: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OFC1YY/ref=as_li_ss_...

Windows 7 has a calibration procedure: Control Panel/Display/Calibrate Color.
I don't know if that is "the best as it could be" but it will put you in the ball park without having to use a colorimeter or other display calibration device.
