Question about

what's the best light weight digital camera/lens to get that dslr telephoto blurring background look?

i was told that buying the portrait lens in the Olympus PEN series would create the look. i think there's an effect setting in the SONY NEX3 that would create that big telephoto lens look.

The "blurry background" on a camera is traditionally called bokeh. It is caused by having a really shallow depth of field (so only what you want is in focus - things in front or behind get blurry). A lens with a wide aperture (small f stop number) will do this better than one with a bigger f/stop. So the Oly and the NEX will both have lens that can do that. A telephoto normally refers to a long zoom lens but you can get bokeh with a "normal" lens as well.
