I know boxed sales of Windows went way up during the launch of 7 (vs. the numbers for boxed sales of Vista), but does anyone have more exact ongoing numbers?
Question about
What percentage of Windows sales is for boxed software? (That is, boxed software vs. Windows bundled on a new machine.
According to www.betanews.com/joewilcox/article/Microsoft-Q1-20...
"Microsoft revealed that OEM licensing now accounts for 75 percent of revenues, down from the longstanding 80 percent threshold. The 5-percent shift reflects a licensing change Microsoft implemented with Windows Vista and continues with version 7: Businesses must adopt Software Assurance annuity licensing to obtain licenses for Windows Enterprise Edition."
Also from another article www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2010/oct10/10...
"Since the new operating system launched worldwide a year ago, Microsoft has sold more than 240 million licenses."
So approx 180 million OEM licenses (75% of 240 mil) and the other 60 million licenses either belong to Enterprise subscribers or retail boxed purchases. But I imagine more accurate numbers can be gleaned from the actual financial report.
